Hurley takes bronze behind Hackett and Stevens

Wollongong’s Robert Hurley has taken the bronze behind Grant Hackett and Craig Stevens in the 400 metre freestyle event at the Australian swimming championships. In a very fast event Hackett won in a time of 3.43.15, his best time since 2001, while Stevens did a personal best (PB) of 3.46.64 and also qualify for the Olympics.

Hurley’s time for third place was also a personal best of 3.49.48. This time was under the qualifying time for the Olympics but only the top two swimmers are selected for the event.

In the 100m backstroke, Hurley came 5th in the final which was won by training partner Ashley Delaney. He still has the 200m backstroke event later on in the week in which he still has a chance to qualify for the Olympics.

Wolves under 15s remain on top after 5 rounds

The Wolves Premier Youth League under 15s continued on their winning way last weekend. They had a convincing 4 nil win over fourth placed Blacktown. As a result the Wolves have equal points with Marconi on top of the ladder but are ahead on goal difference.
The 16s had a nil all draw while the 18s did not have a game
Both the under 13s and under 14s lost to Blacktown City 2 nil.

Saville in 2008 Boomers Squad

Basketball Australia has announced the athletes selected to represent the Australia Post Boomers in the lead up to Beijing. The 33 man squad was announced recently at Rosehill Public School in Sydney’s west, where classes are named after Olympic teams and the first grade class is called ‘The Boomers’.
The squad includes former Wollongong Hawks player, Glen Saville, who is now playing with the Sydney Kings. He joins four other Sydney Kings players in the squad.

The athletes will be put through a rigorous schedule of training camps and international practice games before the names of the final 12 players are a provided to the AOC in early July.

“The first step was to get everybody to put their hand up for selection and we got everyone we wanted with the exception of Stephen Black, who made himself unavailable due to injury” Goorjian said.

“We’ve got a strong squad and some very good players will miss the cut.”
