Think about what you really want

Creating a bucket list!

The movie The Bucket List gave me great inspiration to really think about what I want to achieve by the end of my life. Of course, I have lots of goals set and lots of plans that I’m working on, but creating a bucket list gives everything a whole new perspective!

I started my very own bucket list a few weeks ago and have just kept adding to it when I find new things that inspire me. It really is getting quite long. Particularly when I walk past a travel agent or pick up an adventure sports magazine!!!

Today I had a workshop with a small group of students at Warilla High. I’ve developed a program to get the kids thinking about what they want and what’s possible for their future, to build self-confidence and also to help them find motivation and work towards their gaols. Today’s workshop was about goal setting and getting them to think about what they really want and how they can go about working towards it.

We did a pretty fun goal setting program, with a few different exercises thrown in. One of these was to create their very own bucket list. It really got the kids thinking about what they can do if they set their minds to it and we had some very interesting conversations about the concept of what if you don’t make it to 80 and how can anyone be happy to “kick the bucket?”

The point I tried to make was that we can’t determine our future, no- one knows what will happen tomorrow, next week or next year. Anyone of us could be struck down in an instant, and by creating and working through a bucket list now, it gives us each the opportunity to truly live our lives to the fullest.

Let’s get started!

Here are a few pointers to creating your own bucket list:

Get comfortable, find a patch of sun and grab a coffee and get the inspiration flowing.

Start dreaming! Write down everything and anything that comes to mind.

Think about people you admire, what have they achieved or experienced.

Flick through magazines, papers or take note of what’s around you.

Keep the list handy for the next couple of weeks and just keep adding to it.

Start refining the list. After thinking things through, perhaps you don’t really want to swim with a shark after all????

Do some research into each of the items on the list. (Once you put something on the list, find out what the options are to really make them happen.)

Share the plan with a friend or your partner, the more support you have the more fun it will be. They may even create a plan of their own.

Decide on the first thing to do and set a plan in place to tick it off your list.

So why wait to be diagnosed with an incurable disease, why not start writing and acting on the list today! You just never know, you might be skydiving for your next birthday!!!
