Laughter is the best medicine!

A quality camp experience

Yesterday I returned from my first ever Camp Quality camp as a companion, and the experience was simply amazing. Something I’d really love to share with you!

I began around two years ago really looking for a charity that shared my philosophy on life, about happiness being the most important aspect and about consistent support and encouragement to overcome challenges that people are faced with. I finally found Camp Quality last year. Their philosophy is “Laughter is the best medicine”, and after 5 days at camp, you can see the results they have with the kids!

“Camp Quality is a non profit organisation that is committed to bringing hope and happiness to every child living with cancer, their families and communities through ongoing quality recreational, educational, hospital and financial support programs.

Camp Quality passionately believes in the power of fun in helping children and their families overcome the challenges that cancer brings.”

We started camp on Friday night, with only the companions (that’s the adults) and on Saturday morning the campers arrived, full of energy, excitement and much anticipation about what the camp would bring! All the campers were aged between 6 and 13 and have been at some point affected by cancer. Some have been treated; others have siblings or parents that are being treated. Each child has a unique story and they are all there to simply enjoy their week together and forget all that is involved in their challenge against cancer.

After meeting our campers we set off to our rooms to unpack and get to know each other a little better. Most campers are allocated one companion for the entire camp, so it’s a great chance to really have some fun and spend some quality time with the kids. The camp is structured to give the kids maximum fun time and as much choice as possible about what they want to do.

Some of the activities included:

An excursion to Symbio animal park
    Arts and Crafts
Superhero and Princess dress-up and lessons
    Survivor challenge course
    Bike riding
    Beading lessons
    Movie night
    Archery
    Jumping castles
    Horse riding
    Disco

As a kid I did a lot of horse riding camps and would really look forward to them. It was always a wonderful opportunity to learn new things, meet new friends, and simply become absorbed in the fun of the moment! So going back to camp, many of those emotions returned, and it was even more special being there to support the campers.

Time flew by at the camp and we all had a brilliant time, with the kids getting to do some amazing things they otherwise wouldn’t do and we, as companions, getting to have fun with them and make it all possible!

If at some point you have made a donation to Camp Quality, please know there are so many people whose lives are truly enriched from your kind donation and support! Thank you!

Each and every one of the kids at Camp are overcoming challenges and are a true inspiration to what is possible for our own lives!

If you’re really ready to step up and start living life and need a little assistance to get started, please give me a call on 0409 224 303 and we can work on it together.
