Challenges are important

International software developer calls Wollongong home

After twenty years building up his locally based financial management software development organisation CEO Rob DeDominicis’s company InfoComp Pty Ltd is well on the way to becoming an established international player with offices in several Australian capital cities and London.

Although the pressures of building a truly international enterprise are great, Rob makes a point of keeping his feet firmly on the ground and always finds the time to pursue the types of things that he feels are important to him.

Despite a hectic work schedule he made time for an interview and in a wide ranging discussion WollongongOnline questioned Rob about his public and private passions:

How long have you lived in the area?   All my life except for 2 years overseas

Hobbies / Passions?  Bike riding, gadgets, snow skiing

The hardest thing you’ve ever done was:  Three different types of challenges:

1. Physical challenge: climbing Gran Sasso in Italy
2. Academic challenge: completing my university degree part time
3. Professional challenge: expanding the business internationally

Your life/business philosophy:   Work hard … play hard

At school I enjoyed being there … but for the exams

I wish: I could spend more time skiing and travelling with my family

I’m good at: knowing my weaknesses

I’m bad at: turning off and relaxing

I often wonder: what the future holds and how to influence it

Describe your business … what makes it different/better: Talented people who work together to deliver outstanding results. We focus on what we need to improve on and challenge ourselves to do better

Short term goals? Spend more time with my family and expand the business. Visit a list of ‘places’ I want to see for the first time

Your latest project is: expanding the business via acquisition, new territories and new products

What do you love about your work?  It always changes and presents new challenges

What you would improve about Wollongong?  The area needs much better transport infrastructure

Who has been a mentor or business influences?  Most have been people I have worked with at some time, including clients and colleagues

Has your family/partner been a help?  Yes, in fact my wife worked with me until the birth of our first child

What business books do you read?  I am reading another book by Ricardo Semler – The Seven Day Weekend

What formal qualifications do you have?  A Bachelor of Mathematics from University of Wollongong
