Free Athletics Coaching
Athletics Wollongong is to hold a free coaching clinic at Beaton Park, starting at 10am and finishing at 12.30pm on Sunday 1 June. For details go to www.athleticswollongong.org.au

Also coming up is Illawarra All Schools and Youth Track and Field Championships to be held at Beaton Park from August 3rd – 23rd. It is the only athletics competition held in the Illawarra which gives all athletes up to the age of 19 an opportunity to compete at one competition. Athletics Wollongong has a long and proud tradition in the Illawarra. Since its inception in 1958 (formerly known as Wollongong Southern Flame Amateur Athletics Club) to 2008 (the golden jubilee) the club has strived to develop the sport of track and field in Wollongong. It caters for ages from 8 to 88+ and all abilities and the emphasis is on the whole family enjoying athletics where else can the whole family get together and compete together at the same time.

Registrations 2008-09 for little Athletics at Lake Illawarra will take place on each Sunday in August at King Memorial Oval, the Kingsway, Barrack Heights from 1pm to 3pm. Registrations are taken for Tiny Tots {must be 3 of age} to Under 17 Athletes Both Boys and Girls. Contact is Howard McGarry Ph 42967319 any time after 3pm Monday to Friday Only.

In the “local derby” the Wollongong Wolves took on the Sutherland Shire Sharks last weekend in the Premier Youth League soccer. In the 18s the Wolves continued their good run with a 3 nil win over the bottom placed Sharks. The Wolves are now 4th on the ladder.
In the 16s the lower placed Sharks put up a real fight against the Wolves to finish with a 2 all draw. The Wolves are now 7th on the ladder. In the 15s the Wolves played two rounds last week, defeating a NSW Institute of Sport team 6 nil on the Wednesday and then following up with a 3-2 win over the Sharks last Sunday. With these victories the Wolves sit on top of the 13 team ladder.
In the 14s the top of the table Sharks were too strong for the 11th placed Wolves winning 3-1. In the 13s the result again reflected relative positions on the table with top team Sharks easily accounting for the 11th placed Wolves. Full results were:

Under 13: Sharks 4 Wollongong 1 Eagles swoop on Cardinals
Berkeley Eagles inflicted Wests Cardinals first loss of the 2008 Illawarra Baseball League season with a 6-2 result in the round 6 fixture played on Saturday at Fred Finch Park, Berkeley.
Yet another tight game between these teams had Cardinals leading 2-1 in the sixth inning when Lee Vlasoff doubled to bat in Chase Richardson. The Eagles answered in the seventh when a decisive four runs were scored and a final run came in on Mick Shipp’s second hit of the game in the eighth.
Hard throwing pitcher Hayden Beard closed the Cardinals offence down in his three innings of work after Chris Morgan contained Cardinals to two earned runs in the first six innings. Cardinal’s Blake Handley allowed four earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Catcher Mick Shipp headed Eagles hitting with 2 from 3 with 2 runs batted in while Stuart Thompson and Keith Ward gained two hits and one RBI each. Chase Richardson was Cardinals’ best with 2 from 5
The Bulli Pirates / Dapto Chiefs game produced a nine innings thriller in which Pirates scored two runs in each of the final two innings for a 7-6 win. Pirates hitter Ben Elbourne fought off ten pitches in the final at bat of the game before being responsible for the game winning run being scored.
Relief pitcher Brendan Lower had his best performance for Pirates this season allowing one earned run in six innings and Chiefs reliever Aaron Wirth kept his team in the hunt pitching 4.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits.
Chiefs’ Mitch Thompson batted a game best 3 from 5 being supported by Mark Spears with 2 from 4 and 2 RBI’s. Joe Duldig and Neil Wilcock featured for Pirates with two hits apiece.
Second grade results were: Cardinals 12 Eagles 4; Braves 5 Mariners 3; Pirates 8 Chiefs 6. \
Third grade results were: Eagles 13 Warriors 4; Braves 15 Mariners 10; Pirates 21 Chiefs 5
Minor League: Panthers (4) 12 Warriors 8; Chiefs 14 Cardinals 10; Braves 16 Panthers (5) 5
In next week’s round seven fixtures Bulli Pirates have a home game against Wests Cardinals at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow and Dapto Chiefs play Kiama Braves at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto.
