Cardinals tied up by Pirates

Bulli Pirates have come away with a 3-3 draw against competition leaders Wests Cardinals in their round 12 clash played at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow. The tied result comes after two close losses by the Bucs against Cards earlier in the season.

The nine innings game produced a pitchers game in which Cardinals’ Jamie Simon sent down a complete game conceding one earned run with four hits. Pirates starter Travis Dutton gave 5.2 quality innings of work allowing three earned runs on six hits and closer Brendan Lower was almost untouchable conceding a solitary hit and no earned runs while striking out seven in his 3.1 innings.

Cardinals levelled the score at 1-1 in the fourth inning when Lee Vlasoff’s two out double scored Trent D’Antonio but two errors allowed the home team to score two runs and go 3-1 ahead in the bottom of that inning. Cardinals came back in the sixth., Trent D’Antonio scoring on Lee Vlasoff’s ground ball and Nathan Grogan stood tall batting in Paul Trembearth to tie the game. Cardinals outhit Pirates 7-4, Paul Trembearth topping Cards hitting with 2 / 4 while Brad Drain batted 2 / 4 for Pirates.

In the other game Dapto Chiefs recorder their fourth win of the season defeating Kiama Braves 8-2 at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto.  Their second win in as many weeks has Chiefs move to within striking distance of third position on the table. Chiefs outhit Braves 12-6, Troy Green, Stuart McCarthy and Mark Spears each registering two hits. Shaun Crowther and Brett Single recorded two hits each for Braves.
Table – Cardinals 75%, Eagles 71%, Pirates 50%, Chiefs 44%, Braves 11%.

Casey’s Olympic dream comes true

Casey Eastham may be only 19-years old, but the teenage sensation has become the youngest Hockeyroos player to represent our country at this year’s Beijing Olympics.   Sportslive sports writer Reece Carter profiled Casey earlier in the year when she was still chasing her dream. Extracts from his profile of the Albion Park woman are as follows.

In 2007, Casey faced the daunting task of having to relocate to Perth to train at the Australian Institute of Hockey, but the ‘baby’ of the squad now sees it as a challenge and experience for the better.

Alone on a plane, it could’ve been easy for Casey to regret her decision to leave home. However, in between the sobs of homesickness and a churning stomach, she was able to set her sights on her goals.

“It was really sad leaving but I knew it was the chance of a lifetime and I had to give it a shot,” she says. “The trip to the airport wasn’t the best, I cried the whole way and didn’t stop until a week later.”

But if all this rewards Casey with a place in the Hockeyroos Olympic team, the tears and hard work will be worth it. And there has been a lot of hard work.

Casey has played hockey ever since her parents let her hold a stick. Even at the age of five, she had the steely determination that would see her one day move up the ranks to the hockey elite. Playing at club level for Albion Park however doesn’t come with the hype and pressures of being in the public eye.  For more on Casey’s profile go to: http://wollongong.sportslive.com.au/index.pl?page=2964
