ICAC back on agenda?

Missing person holds the key

The news that mystery player in the ICAC investigations into certain affairs in Wollongong has been located and wants to talk more will be welcomed by many who believe the inquiry didn’t really reach any conclusions.

Ray Younan became mixed up in the inquiry when it was suggested he had been paid for “services” by local developers and even received a crate of whisky from a then local councillor to help protect him from the commission’s investigations.

He then disappeared, but has now been located and says he would be happy to answer questions.

For many of us who believe the ICAC inquiry fizzled out somewhat having him back on the stand might lead to more conclusive findings.

Haven’t you been to Bondi, Kevin?

So our Prime Minister is buying into another seemingly useless state of affairs, this time his apparent dislike of a six – year – old girl posing nude for a photo taken by her mother.

Okay, the harmless photo has bobbed up on the front page of Art Monthly Australia and has become part of the debate on nudity and art and what can be displayed in art galleries and the like.

It’s not hard to see why the young girl, now aged 11, says she is offended by Kevin Rudd’s comments and would be happy to debate the issue with him.

Here we are having all this hoo – hah going on about nudity, particularly involving younger people, being put on public display when you only have to visit certain parts of Bondi beach in the season and it’s everywhere.

Obviously, our PM hasn’t been there or maybe he wouldn’t be getting involved in the nudity thing at all.

Anyway, he’s gone on yet another overseas jaunt while most Aussies struggle to make ends meet. Good to see Kev that you’ve got your priorities in the right order.

Hard to keep up with

In one breath our governments suggest our liquor laws are too flexible and they could be a major cause in drinking problems in society, but now we see amendments to bar trading conditions that will allow restaurant owners to serve alcohol without their customers also having to consume a meal.

Shut a gate here and leave another open. It’s very atypical of how governments seem to operate these days.

Is it really worth it?

The closer it gets the more one must question the real value of the visit to Sydney by His Highness Pope Benedict.

Being put on at a tremendous cost to taxpayers and bringing with it major traffic disruptions to Sydney itself, let alone the cancelling of a number of race meetings at Randwick, and now a ban on protests of any kind, one wonders what it will really achieve?

I can just see the T – shirt manufacturers rubbing their hands with glee at a police decision to pounce on anyone even seen to be cheeky, let alone disruptive in any way. Like wearing a “funny” T – shirt.

And now we see the launch of a special curio shop in Sydney to attract the visiting pilgrims. Where will the profits from here go, I wonder?

I liked the letter in the local over the weekend that suggested the bulk of the costs of the whole pantomime should be met by the Catholic Church, and not the taxpayers.

But that’s the Presbyterian coming out in me!

An absolute disgrace

In the light of the recent Picton Road accidents and near misses the news that the State Government has no plans for new infrastructure in our region until at least 2016 is disturbing to say the least.

It makes a mockery of the odd statements made suggesting otherwise by our elected Labor pollies, and particularly the Minister for the Illawarra David Campbell.

There have already been serious questions asked about Campbell’s performance in this role, and this latest news further compounds what many of us think about him.

Boost for soccer

The selection of Bulli defender Ruben Zadkovich in an 18 player Olyroos squad for the Beijing Olympics is most welcome, and must be a boost to local soccer.

He joins former South Coast goalie Adam Federici in the squad, and we wish them well.
