A ray of hope

Neighborhood groups to return

Amid all the goings on about the time being taken for the ICAC report to be handed down and talks of a need for a Royal Commission into certain matters pertaining to our former city councillors and others the likelihood of neighbourhood committees returning is a ray of sunshine

Scrapped by the former city councillors the once popular neighbourhood committees will again provide ratepayers with an opportunity to have their say on local issues of concern, and hopefully see some actions result.

The committees in the past were sane and sensible in their approach to local issues and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t see this happen again.

Our city boundaries stretch lengthily from Helensburgh to south of Dapto and there’s certainly every good reason to have ratepayers in all areas have some input.

It is certainly welcome news in the light of recent calls for a Royal Commission into the problems  involving some councillors and officers that first brought ICAC to town and the ongoing calls for the sacking  of the State Member for Wollongong Noreen Hay for her supposed involvement in local development matters.

There are many people out there who tell me they are disappointed in the time being taken by ICAC to go public with their findings, and I agree with them. But a Royal Commission?

And what’s more of late I am hearing that more ratepayers would like to be given another chance to elect a new council, and sooner rather than later.

Like me many feel that the longer the administrators stay the greater will become the power of management, and wasn’t that a key problem in the immediate past?

Bringing back the neighbourhood committees is a step in the overall right direction.

Enough to make you sick

While thousands of people out there face rises in bank costs and the like I notice the good old NAB has appointed a new chief who seems likely to collect $7.5 million a year in salary, shares and bonuses.

It makes me sick!

Thanks Bert

Don’t know whether or not you watched Rove on TV on Sunday night but his chief guest Bert Newton found time when the name Wollongong came up to suggest it was a place he’d always had a lot of time for.

It was a pleasant change, even though only a few words, to hear our name given a plus on TV.

More work to do

Pleasing to hear that the local Rotarians input into the annual bowel scan project saw a major boost in sales of these invaluable kits, but there are still too many people out there who buy a kit and don’t put it to use.

I’m told that 22 positives were returned from those who did use the kits, and two of those have since been confirmed as having bowel cancer and have been operated on.

It’s a worthwhile project so keep your eyes peeled for later in the year when once again the kits will be available, mostly at chemists, and if you do buy one don’t forget to use it.
