National Stroke Week is an initiative of the Stroke Foundation. Running from the 15th-21st September, the aim of National Stroke Week is to help raise awareness about stroke prevention.
Stroke is the second biggest killer in Australia and it is estimated that in 2008, approximately 60,000 Australians will suffer a new or recurrent stroke – that comes to 1 stroke every 10 minutes.
Many incidence of stroke are preventable and can be managed through lifestyle factors including diet and exercise. Based on this we will run a Stroke Safe Awareness Seminar, it is the only National Stroke Week event of this kind in the Illawarra. This event is a fundraiser for the well established & renowned National Stroke Foundation to continue research and development in preventing and managing stroke. The Seminar will include the following topics:

1. What part does food play in increasing the risk of having a stroke?
2. How to prevent stroke by the foods you eat.
3. What medical conditions e.g. diabetes or high blood pressure are linked with increasing the risk of stroke and how food can assist in reducing those risk factors?
4. Practical advice for everyday living in preventing stroke
This nutrition component of the seminar will briefly discuss the above topics mentioned. There will also be a display of appropriate foods choices from the local supermarket.
