Wolves 15s overcome by Stallions at final hurdle

After leading the table coming into the playoffs and winning its final to qualify directly for the grand final, the Wolves 15s gave their fans high hopes of taking out the title. Unfortunately, the Marconi Stallions were too strong on the day and netted two goals to nil. A very promising season for the Wolves had a disappointing end.

The 5 titles were shared around four clubs with the Sharks taking two, APIA Leichhardt Tigers, Blacktown City and Marconi Stallions taking one each. The results of all grand finals at Gabbie Stadium Blacktown last Saturday August 30 were:

Under 18s:
Grand Final: Blacktown City 0 lost to APIA Leichhardt Tigers 2

Under 16s:

Under 15s:

Under 14s:

Wests Cardinals first into baseball Grand Final

Wests Cardinals qualified for their fifth consecutive Illawarra Baseball League Grand Finals Series when they defeated defending premiers Berkeley Eagles 8-1 in the major semi final played on Saturday at Cringila Community Park.

Eagles were never in the game after conceding five runs in the first two innings. Two unearned runs scored in the first inning when a defensive error was made on the first play of that inning, the runs being batted in by Trent D’Antonio and Josh Dean. Jeff Trembearth’s two run double in the second inning started to put Cardinals in a commanding position and his RBI in the fourth followed by RBI’s by Chase Richardson and Josh Dean sealed Eagles fate.

Cardinals’ pitcher Jamie Simon was right on top of the opposition hitters allowing just one earned run on seven hits in a complete nine innings performance. Eagles relief pitcher Hayden Beard pitched three solid innings conceding no earned runs on one hit.

Cardinals outhit Eagles 10-7, centerfielder Chase Richardson starring with 3 from 5 and a run batted in while shortstop Jeff Trembearth batted in three runs with his 2 from 5. Chris Morgan was the pick of Eagles hitters with 3 from 4.

Eagles will now play Dapto Chiefs in next week’s Preliminary Final following Chiefs’ 12-2 win in seven innings over Bulli Pirates in the elimination semi final at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow.

In an amazing outcome Pirates fought back to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth innings after Chiefs scored in the first and fourth innings. Pirates virtually self destructed in the bottom of the seventh by allowing the opposition to score ten runs on three errors made by the Bucs defence.

Chiefs outhit Pirates 12-3, starting third baseman Jonathan Hall batting 3 from 4 with 2 RBI’s being backed with two hits each by Craig Leighton, Mitchell Thompson and Troy Green.

Chiefs starting pitcher Aaron Wirth allowed 3 hits and one earned run in five innings while reliever Hall pitched two hitless innings.
