The real bottomline
John Bown’s tome of the Wonders of the World made amusing reading for the incredible inclusion of some questionable supposed local wonders.
The Wonders of the World, ancient or modern, are not money making concerns. The Wonders are usually incredible feats of humankind that span the imagination, mainly in architecture.
There are obvious differences between the natural and human kind of Wonders.
The only Natural Wonder we have in the Illawarra is the Illawarra Escarpment.
Described by no less a person than Sir David Attenborough as the Kakadu of New South Wales. With reports of large areas of the original Kakadu being possibly lost to the reality of Climate Change, we must certainly protect our version from the human climate change factor, the unscrupulous developer.
Though we have beaches and lakes which add to our area, there is nothing outstanding to list them as a extraordinary world natural site, especially with encroachment of buildings. Hayward's Bay at Lake Illawarra, is a prime example.
As for man made, the only Wonder about the Lagoon restaurant is how they got that incredible lease arrangement where ratepayers have lost big time through the former incompetent senior management and questionable ICAC ex-councillors.
As for Jamberoo, the Wonder there, is the continual loss of beautiful natural scenery there to money making developments.
I don’t think there’s any comparison, except laughable, between the Great Pyramids of Giza and Jamberoo Recreation Park.
With the final Wonder for future generations of how we could have let this loss happen if we lose the Illawarra Escarpment to the almighty buck.
Yours Sincerely,
