Hurley continues winning form in Singapore

Following on from his world record swim in the 50m backstroke in Sydney on 26 October, Illawarra’s Robert Hurley raced away to win the 100m backstroke Final in Singapore’s World Cup event on Saturday night (November 1).

He won the event against a very strong international lineup in the sizzling time of 50.28 secs (a Personal Best by over half a second) with this time being a World Cup record. It was the 3rd fastest backstroke swim of all time .... just 0.29 away from the world record held by USA's super swimmer Ryan Lochte (a backstroke gold medallist in Beijing).

Additionally Hurley's time smashed the Australian record of of 50.71 secs held jointly by Matt Welsh (recently retired) and Beijing Olympic finalist Ashley Delaney.

Less than 30 minutes later, Robert backed up to chase Olympic champion Oussama Mellouli home in the 400m freestyle ..... as per last weekend in Sydney.

In a powerful international line-up on the second night of the Singapore event (Sunday November 2) Hurley finished with the silver medal in the 50m backstroke final with his time of 23.53 secs being just under three-tenths outside his world record established last weekend. USA champion Randall Bal (the 3rd fastest all-time) won in 23.35 secs with fellow USA swimmer Peter Marshall, winner of this event at this year's world short-course championships in Manchester, a close 3rd. The experienced USA duo of Bal and Marshall have been two of the world's most dominant backstroke short course swimmers in recent years and both are ranked in the top 5 all-time.

Later, in the 200m backstroke final, Hurley finished 3rd behind fellow Australian Ashley Delaney and Randall Bal (USA). Hurley’s time was some 4 seconds slower than his win over Delaney in Sydney last week with his tough schedule probably taking its toll.

Summary of Hurley’s weekend results:
Gold in the 100m backstroke - a World Cup record, smashing the Australian record and narrowly missing the world record (less than three-tenths). Third fastest time in history.
Silver in the 400m freestyle - once again chasing home Olympic 1500m gold medallist Oussama Mellouli.
Silver in the 50m backstroke - splitting USA's "big guns" Randall Bal and Peter Marshall.
Bronze in the 200m backstroke - in relatively slow time.

Next stop: Moscow next weekend.
