McDevitt scores a ton, Moore and Waldock’s century stand in junior cricket

In the recently completed round of Illawarra/South Coast junior cricket Corrimal’s T McDevitt scored a century for Corrimal’s under 14A team against Helensburgh. He retired after reaching 101 and the team managed to reach 8 for 219 off its 60 overs in the first week of the match. Unfortunately the second week of the game was abandoned due to fog and rain.

In the under 12s match between Wests Red and Thirroul Blue, Wests batted first and openers J Moore (75 retired) and C Waldock (51) put on 120 before Waldock was run out by B Davis. Davis then capitalised on his effort by taking 5/9 and causing a collapse to see Wests end up with 8/161 off its 50 overs. In reply Thirroul Blue put up a great effort but ran out of overs to finish at 8/151 and lose a hard fought match.

Other outstanding performances included Wests Red bowlers in their outright victory over Albion Park in the 16A competition. A Jones and R Maris each took 3/10 in Albion Park’s first innings of 50, while J Adamson took 5/14 to have the Park dismissed for 76 in the second innings. With Wests Red’s first innings score being 138 it won by an innings and 12 runs.

In the 16B’s Helensburgh picked up an outright over a shorthanded Port Kembla side. Helensburgh scored 8/209 (E Piggott 67, H McCrae 46, B Townsend 4/23) on the first day. Having begun the match with only ten players, Port could only bat 9 players on the second day as they lost a player to injury between week one and two. With Helensburgh’s Ring bowling well to take 4/8, Port was dismissed for 50 in its first innings. Having been sent in again the nine Port players fought hard to reach 108 in the second innings.
The under 11’s match between Keira Black and Thirroul was as close as they come. Thirroul made 4/70 (W. Atkinson 1/3; B. O'Brien 1/1; I. Osborne 1/2) in its 26 over innings. Thirroul then took 9 Keira Black wickets but Keira still managed to get to the target of 71 (P Everett 2/9, A Prabphai 2/11) in the last over to pick up the win.

Illawarra Players selected for NSW Claxton Shield Team

Two Illawarra based players have been selected to represent New South Wales in the forthcoming 2009 Claxton Shield tournament.

Utility players Trent D’Antonio and Tim Atherton will line up with the twelve times title winning N S W Patriots team. This will be 23 years old D’Antonio’s seventh consecutive Claxton Shield series and 19 years old Atherton will be playing his second.

The 2009 tournament has been designated the Diamond Anniversary series by Australian Baseball to commemorate the 75th year.

The players have been selected to play in the Showcase Round at Blacktown Olympic Park between December 2-7 where teams representing New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland will clash.

Following the Showcase Round all teams will play a home and away series culminating in the Finals being played February 6-8, 2009. One of the home games for N S W will be played in Wollongong on December 14.

D’Antonio played with the IBL premiership winning Wests Cardinals during this year after having success in the United Stated Minor Leagues for the previous three years in the Florida Marlins organisation. D’Antonio was one of the youngest ever players to represent in the Claxton Shield when first selected to play for the Australian Provincial team as a 16 years old in 2003.

A member of the National team that played at the 2006 IBAF World Cup in Holland, D’Antonio surpasses the number of selections of father Ben and uncle Dom D’Antonio as N.S.W. Claxton Shield players. Ben represented in 1978, 1980 and 1981 while Dom played in the 1983 and 1984 series.

Atherton played with the 2007 IBL premiership winning Berkeley Eagles club and represented Australia at the World Schoolboys Championships held in Canada in September that year. He was awarded the Illawarra Mercury player of the 2007 Illawarra Baseball League Grand Final Series. Atherton played the recent northern hemisphere summer season with the Minnesota Major League organisation.

Both players are playing in the current New South Wales Baseball Major League competition with the Canterbury Bankstown club.
