2009 Australia Day Illawarra Aquathon
Illawarra’s favourite summer community fitness event and Australia’s largest event of its type, The Australia Day Illawarra Aquathon is championing businesses to start preparing and organising teams for the coming 2009 Australia Day Illawarra Aquathon.
Held on Australia Day, Monday 26tJanuary 2009, at the picturesque Wollongong harbour, the event is billed as a fun ‘splash and dash’, taking participants through a sheltered swim at Wollongong harbour, then either tagging a team member, or swapping goggles for joggers and completing the run section along the safe and flat coastal foreshore.
Adult courses include the SHORT AQUA involving a 400m swim + 3km run, or the LONG AQUA, a 900m swim and 7km Run with both individual and team categories. Businesses are encouraged to enter in corporate teams divided into male, female and mix categories.
Kids are encouraged to enter the KIDZ AQUAFUN featuring a 200m swim and 2km run, and perfect for all ages 6 – 12 years. Older kids can enter the Short and Long Course.

The event turns eleven in 2009, and continues to attract a growing field, with over 1000 entrants in 2008. Billed as Wollongong’s own signature fitness event, in the ilk of events as the City to Surf, it is about community fitness and fun. The event attracts wide community support and draws large and repeat tourist numbers. The event is also active on the fundraising front, with over $6500 donated to Anglicare last year.
Entrants receive valued entry with fantastic services, brilliant support crew, entrant pack including Peoplecare sun block, insurance, Eyeline Australia Day logo swim cap, electronic timing, post event refreshments, first aid services, and over $10,000 of give aways, prizes and barrel draws up for grabs.
Organisers are championing the event to the wider community and hope to see businesses take up the challenge.
Illawarra businesses as Peoplecare Health Insurance, Illawarra Credit Union, D&D Services and WIN TV, have already entered teams and are challenging other businesses to take up the challenge
