Illawarra players in NSW squad which makes Claxton Shield final

NSW Patriots have defeated the Victorian Aces in the semi-final of Baseball’s Claxton Shield last weekend. Two Illawarra based players, Trent D’Antonio and Tim Atherton are in the NSW squad.

The best of three series was played in Melbourne from January 23 - 25.

The Aces got away in the first game to win 7 - 1. NSW replied with an equally convincing reply to win 9 nil in game 2.

With the third game decider, NSW scored 3 runs in the 3rd innings and the NSW pitchers kept the Vics scoreless coming into the ninth. NSW scored another two runs in the ninth to put the game out of the Aces reach. They remained scoreless for the match to give NSW a 5 nil victory.

NSW now go to Perth to play the final series over three matches from February 6 - 8.

Retirees galore in under 11 junior cricket

In last weekend’s under 11 Illawarra cricket between Wests Blue and Corrimal there were 5 players who had to retire on reaching the compulsory retirement score. In Wests Blue’s winning score of 3 for 135, L Galea, M Phillips and K Richards all retired on 30, while in Corrimal’s reply of 7/128, J Cotterill (30) and N Henderson (31) also retired. 

Also in under 11s, Balgownie’s total of 5/197 had three retirees in J Willis (33), C Buswell (33) and J Hurt (32) while J Lackenby completed the innings on 28 not out. In Helensburgh’s reply of 8/93 in the one day match the top scorer was C Cuthbertson with 27.

In an outstanding performance on day 1 of the two day under 16 match between Port Kembla and Balgownie, Port’s Brock Townsend took 7/30. Balgownie scored 173 and in reply Port is 1/8.

In the under 14B one day game, West White’s J Stylianou scored 52 in his team’s innings of 4/127 to defeat Balgownie who scored 5/74. Also in the 14Bs, Keira Black’s N Stacey top scored with 53 while Balgownie Black’s T Green took 4/15 in Keira’s score of 7/123. Balgownie was only able to make 87 and so lost the game.

Illawarra Junior cricket’s Ten/10 DMW tournaments coming up

Illawarra junior cricket’s DMW competitions are to begin on Sunday February 1 with the Under 16A and under 14B days. The under 16A tournament is at Dalton Park, while the 14B is at Helensburgh

The DMW Group sponsored tournaments aim to be a fun day with each player bowling an over in the ten over innings. A batsman can face a maximum of 15 balls or retires at 20 in any one game. The batting order is rotated between games to ensure that every player gets at least one bat in the initial round robin rounds.

Other DMW tournaments are as follows:

Under 14A: February 8 at Dalton Park

Under 16B: February 15 at Reed Park

Under 11: February 15 at Darcy Wentworth

Under 12: March 1 at Dalton Park

Under 10: March 8 at Helensburgh
