Big totals and tons in Illawarra junior cricket

A number of big innings totals resulting from individual centuries featured in last weekend’s round of Illawarra Junior cricket. Opener G Crawford scored 102 not out, ably supported by T English (74), in Thirroul under 16A’s imposing total of 6 for 281 against Corrimal. Corrimal found the chase too much and could only muster 162 in reply. As reported last week, Port Kembla’s Brock Townsend took the outstanding figures of 7/30 on day 1 of the match to have Balgownie dismissed for 173. However, despite L Faughlin’s 43, Port could only manage 134 and lost on the first innings.

In the 16B’s Hayden McCrae scored 100 not out and C Ring was unfortunately dismissed for 95 in Helensburgh’s mammoth 9/294 against Albion Park who fell short being dismissed for a respectable 209. In Balgownie 14A’s total of 5/236 against Dapto, C Brown retired on 100 and was well supported by C Huckle 37 and K Brockley. In reply Dapto could only muster 66 with C Veney being Balgownie’s best bowler with 3/14. Corrimal in its 14A game against Warilla redeemed itself and picked up bonus points in the second innings with 5/234 (M Jones 76, D Baldwin 45, M Donovan 34) after being dismissed for 68 in the first innings. Warilla’s first innings of 169, however, gave them the win.

In the under 11 games there were a number of retirees at the compulsory 30 run mark, including Keira Red’s K Booth (30), West Red’s S Murthy (32), Dapto’s B Webb (31), Corrimal’s G Wijekulasuriya (32), Helensburgh’s R McAlpine (33), Balgownie’s H Lackenby (30) and J Lackenby (30), West Blue’s M Phillips (30) and K Richards (31).

As Craig Stevens retires is Hurley next in line for 400m?

With Grant Hackett retiring last year and now Craig Stevens also calling it a day, Wollongong’s Robert Hurley is in line to take up Australia’s 400m freestyle mantle. In last year’s trials for Beijing Olympic selection, Hurley came third behind Hackett and Stevens in an Olympic qualifying time. However, as only the top two go to the Olympics, Hurley missed out.

Also Hurley has been nominated by Australian national development coach, Leigh Nugent as one of three leading Australian prospects to take over Hackett’s 1500m freestyle title. Hurley swam his first long course 1500m freestyle race in the Queensland state titles just before Christmas. He overcame a two second deficit behind the race leader with 100m to go to win by two seconds.

Hurley will compete in the NSW State Open Championships from Feb 13-15. This meet will be followed by Australian Championships which are the World Swimming Championships selection trials in Sydney on Tuesday 17 March to Sunday 22 March.

Aged 15 to 19 and want to play cricket in the West Indies?

A proposed NSW catholic boys’ tour is currently looking for players to go to the West Indies. The tour leaders are both high school teachers in catholic schools and have run the NSW CCC Opens team for the past few years.

They are looking for about 4-5 players of ages 15 - 19 who would be keen to tour in July this year. It would be a great opportunity for a young player to gain experience and enjoy learning another culture.

Players of any school background and ability are welcome. For further details contact, Justin Smith, one of the teachers from Marist College Kogarah (Kerry O’Keeffe’s old school) on 0447400616 or email: justin_smith@mckogarah.catholic.edu.au

Gold medal winning coach Ettridge retains Rollers’ role

Australia’s men’s wheelchair basketball team will retain the same staff that led them to a Gold Medal at the Paralympic Games in Beijing after all incumbents were-appointed by Basketball Australia. Wollongong and Illawarra Paralympians Troy Sachs, Tristan Knowles, Brendan Dowler and Brett Stibner were in Australia’s gold medal winning team. They recently took out the Illawarra Mercury Sportstar award for 2008.

Ben Ettridge will once again head up the Rollers staff as head coach and will be supported by Craig Friday as Assistant Coach.  Kelvin Browner remains the team manager and Ian Lowther will be the physiotherapist.

The Rollers will have a camp in February in advance of the Paralympic Cup to be held in Manchester in May.

In a new appointment, Perth’s John Triscari will be the new head coach of Australia’s women’s wheelchair basketball team, the Gliders, replacing outgoing coach Gerry Hewson.

Triscari has been the Head Coach of the Western Stars in the Women’s National Wheelchair Basketball League (WNWBL), who were runners up in last year’s competition. He has also coached at a state level with the Western Australian Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 teams.

He has also been part of the National Intensive Training Centre Program (NITCP) for many years in the West and has been involved with the very successful Perth Wheelcats, the champion men’s NWBL team.

The gliders open their 2009 international program in February at the Osaka Cup in Japan where they will compete against Canada, the USA and the host nation.

Comments

Please when referring to swimmers takeing over the mantle of Hackey and Stevens please provide the time Robert Hurley swam for the 1500m that gives some perspective as to the reality of Mr. Hurleys likely success and gives the reader comparisons to ponder.

The main focus of the article was on Hurley's 400m performance to date. The comments about the 1500m were from Australian Swimming Development coach, Leigh Nugent. While Hurley's time was well outside Hackett's record it was also his first swim in the event in Queensland and he was in full training, had swam quite a few other races at the meet (freestyle and backstroke) and was not specially prepared for the event. Hence the time was not important. It will be important to observe how he goes at the Australian Championships in March when he will be "tapered" for the meet.
