Lawyer and activist Michael Sergent has every right to complain about the ongoing secrecy surrounding what is believed to be six proposals for the future of Wollongong Harbour’s redevelopment.
This is just another case of the NSW Government stepping in and putting things onto the back burner and, what’s more, keeping the proposals away from us locals.
We know the appropriate Minister, Tony Kelly, established a local advisory group to review the various proposals but, unfortunately, like so many similar local bodies they have seemingly failed to act.
I’m sure we all wish Mr Sergent the very best in the action he is taking before the court to have the documents in question made available to the public.
What was that about?
A friend of mine popped into The Lagoon for lunch recently and lo and behold there was the new St George Illawarra Dragons coach Wayne Bennett and entrepreneur John Singleton huddled in a corner dining and talking.
I guess we’ll never know what brought this odd couple together.
Who really wants parking meters?
It doesn’t seem that our city council staff will ever listen to the public who not so long ago emitted howls of protest at the thought of parking meters in the city.
Now it seems they would like to proceed with something the great majority of ratepayers don’t want.
Kidzwish shaping up well
It appears that despite the current economic downturn those companies and individuals who have been sponsoring the KidzWish Foundation are going to hop on board again this year.
Local company Finance Control has already renewed their commitment to sponsor the annual charity ball and Delta Power has also advised they will again be a major backer of the children’s monster Christmas party.
I’m also advised there are a number of new faces on the sponsorship list, all of which is great for this fine locally run organisation and its aim to assist disadvantaged and disabled children wherever and whenever they can.
NRL should pay its own way
Could hardly believe my eyes when I read about the NRL asking the Federal Government for about $20 million to help them develop a new central administration set-up in Sydney and to co-ordinate new community activities including an indigenous program.
I’m sure like me there are many taxpayers out there who will find this scandalous. The mere thought of my taxes going toward any sporting body is bad enough, but the thought of a government stepping in to help an organisation suffering a community backlash over its players’ bad drinking problems is out of this world.
Get your house in order Mr Gallop, get the attendances up and pay your own way.
Local walk in Top Ten
Good to read that the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk was rated the fourth best activity you might get involved at Easter in the most recent NRMA Open Road magazine.
Top place was the Sydney Aquarium.
Big charity fundraiser
Well-known local business, Essential Personnel Community Participation Group, will be holding a major fundraising ball at the Fraternity Club on Saturday 9 May.
The big night will include entertainment, an auction and a raffle, and tickets are available by contacting Cathy Potter on 4283 1166.
There’s also a marathon bicycle ride being planned to coincide with the big night, but more about that next week. |
