Bottomline

Fears now for our lake

The Save Lake Illawarra Action Group (SLIAG) has every reason to be concerned about the draft Wollongong City Council Local Environment Plan because they believe it could leave the lake open to all types of development

Among their concerns are the possibility that doors will be opened for the building of boat sheds, kiosks, restaurants, marinas, moorings and water recreation structures.

Their spokesperson Bob Parsons has gone as far as to suggest having a McDonald’s in the middle of the lake or a WIN Stadium–like structure on the foreshore.

Now that’s going a bit far but once any door is allowed to open a planning disaster could follow.

Personally, I can recall with some pleasure watching people water ski and motor boat down around Kanahooka Point, and I wouldn’t have any objection to a return of the odd charter boat so more people can take in the wonderful vista of this big expanse of water and it’s attractive location.

But if you are like Bob then you only have until 17 April to view the LEP and make any objections.

Progress might be one thing, but let’s not clutter up our glorious lake.

Bill wants more

Liberal Senator for NSW, the often outspoken Bill Heffernan, tells me he will again seek pre-selection for the next national election.

The man from the country area of Junee says that during his time in parliament he has taken a leading role fighting for and delivering on national water issues and in encouraging agricultural and other related industries.

Let’s hope he gets back again for we need more of his type in parliament.

China beckons

Met a fellow recently who has spent the last year in China where he says “life is a ball”.

He teaches English part time and also ballroom dancing. “The Chinese just love to dance,” he says.

China, he suggested, is a cheaper place to live than here, the grog doesn’t cost as much, smoking is seen as a sign of friendship, gambling is big and sex is now a major attraction.

And I was thinking of going to Tasmania for my next break!!

Interesting reaction

I’ve been interested in the reaction of people to the decision to allow TABs to open on Good Friday.

I found that most people regarded it as a backward step and although they didn’t profess to be overly religious they just thought it wasn’t really necessary.

Those who didn’t care one way or another just shrugged their shoulders and suggested anything goes these days so why can’t you bet on Good Friday, and anyway the NRL has a game scheduled on the day.

Surely though there must come a time when sport doesn’t totally rule our way of living?

Comments

John has some interesting comments on China and the possibility of hoidaying there. I thought John was off the grog, doesn't smoke and never knew him as a gambler. Leaves just one reason for the China holiday.
