It’s interesting that we are the only creatures on earth that believe we have the power to manage time. In fact, we are the only species that has a concept for time. Time is simply now, there is no such thing as the future, there is no such thing as the past, they are all concepts to assist us in understanding that time is an endless stream of the current moment.
Essentially there are 3 things we can do with our time:
1. Waste it – Time spent in nothingness, achieving nothing. Let me be clear, I don’t mean time relaxing, or even time waiting in line, I mean time where you don’t achieve anything and aren’t working towards anything. When you recognise you’re really wasting time, step up, find something constructive to do to add value to your life. When you do catch yourself wasting time, accept that the next time you use the old adage ‘I just didn’t have the time to get that done’, it really is an excuse!
2. Sell it – Generally workers sell their time; we work for an hourly rate or salary and are paid in return for our time on the job. This is the option that the majority of Australians take and there isn’t anything wrong with selling our time and generating our career, as long as were also investing some of it.
3. Invest it – Make our time valuable by learning and educating ourselves. In this way we can truly become wealthy as we are able to leverage both our time and money and set them working for us, not the other way round. The reason so many entrepreneurs who have been bankrupt and come back to succeed to even greater heights is that no-one is ever able to take their knowledge from them. The knowledge is theirs alone, the experiences and the challenges are what they built their fortunes on in the first place, and it’s what they all use when rebuilding for a second time.
So where is it you are spending most of your time, and how can you move towards investing it more wisely? Perhaps learning a new skill, perhaps reading up on a new subject, or even investing time into helping your kids understand life a little better.
