Wollongong’s Robert Hurley begins US trip well

Wollongong’s Robert Hurley is part of an Australian national swimming Squad, including Stephanie Rice and Leisel Jones, who have been training at high altitude in Arizona in their preparation for World swimming Championships in Rome in July.

As part of that training program the Australian swimmers (31 in all) will compete in two meets. The first is the Southwest Classic Invitational. Australian champion Hurley has taken out the 400m freestyle final. He qualified only 6th fastest for the 400 in a relatively slow time but has then come back to narrowly beat the top seed and Canadian champion Ryan Cochrane in the Final in 3:50.25 in the slow outdoor pool. Another Aussie Ryan Napoleon (2nd to Hurley at the Australian Championships) was 2 seconds away in 3rd place.

Canadian Ryan Cochrane was the young swimmer who led for much of the 1500m freestyle at the Beijing Olympics before finishing 3rd to Mellouli and Hackett. He is the Canadian record holder for both the 1500m and 400m races and finished 9th in Beijing in the 400m so Hurley was pleased to get this victory over him.

The Southwest Classic Invitational includes the Australians as well as a sprinkling of high profile swimmers from the USA, Canada and a few other countries. This meet is being used as a warm-up for next weekend's Santa Clara International which will feature many of the world's best including several Olympic gold medallists.

A number of other Australians have also won events including Liesel Jones and Stephanie Rice. Results and videos can be seen on www.floswimming.com
