Bottomline
by John Bown

Christmas is coming early

It’s almost that time of the year – Tuesday 7 July in fact – when the annual Christmas in July function will be held in aid of Essential Personnel’s Community Participation Program which helps educate young adults with disabilities at its “Rui’s Place” Balgownie home

The event will commence from 11am at Dapto Leagues Club and for $25 you will be fed a roast meal with veggies and pudding, and there will also be musical entertainment, which is being sponsored by the club, and the opportunity to dance your time away.

Organiser Cathy Potter says it will be a day of fun and the proceeds will go towards “a wonderful cause”.

You can get further information by calling Cathy on 4283 1166 or 0438 438 845.

See you there.

And there’s more

Also on the coming program for the community participation program is the bicycle ride by four supporters of the organisation from Goulburn to Balgownie on 24 – 25 June.

The cyclists who will brave the elements and help to raise monies for the organisation are Luke Potter, Jim Bartle, Michael Torchia and Matt Spence.

Previous rides over the testing 150 kilometres have helped raise $7000, so let’s hope this can be bettered this year.

Once again you can call Cathy Potter to make a donation.

It’s a bit much

For the life of me I cannot come to terms with the NRL and them wanting to quarantining some of the players because of concerns about swine fever.

They should be fit enough by this time of the season not to get it or at least get rid of it quickly.

Oh well, I suppose it’s a break from some players having illicit affairs and getting involved in pub skirmishes!!

Where’s the fairness?

The latest decision to give thousands of federal public servants 30 or more weeks’ parental leave paid by you and me the taxpayer is outrageous.

And when you consider the Federal Government is Australia’s largest employer of people in the country it just makes matters worse.

I would have thought that in today’s pressing economic times where major private companies are being forced to stand people down that our Federal Government would do likewise.

Still not good

Which brings me to the point that I’m being regularly told by employees out their that BlueScope Steel is struggling and that all sorts of queer leave arrangements are being introduced and “get out of here” packages being put forward.

Evidently despite all the ‘hoo hah’ about what a great step forward the reline of the big furnace out there is orders are down and it could be some time before the furnace ever gets back into full swing.

Comments

Fair or not, paid parental leave must start somewhere. It's long overdue in Australia where women have worked full or part time to contribute to the mortgage payments.
