Goals aplenty as Wollongong dominates Sharks in junior soccer

With rain wiping out many of last weekend’s Illawarra soccer events, the Wollongong Premier Youth League teams were fortunate to be playing on Sutherland’s synthetic pitch in Miranda. The Wollongong sides all scored goals and picked up 4 wins out of 5 with only the 15s going down narrowly by 3 – 2.

After last weekend’s matches, the Wollongong 16s moved back to the top of the table on 32 points but their nearest rivals Sydney United (30 points) and Blacktown City (27 points) have 1 and two games respectively in hand and could leap-frog Wollongong if they win them. The Wollongong 18s on 40 points is a clear leader and even if Blacktown (30 points) wins both its two games in hand it still cannot overtake the dominant local team. Other Wollongong teams in the play-off top 5 are the 13s (second) and the 14s (fifth). The 15s are 6th, 1 point out of the top 5.

Results for the round 16 played last weekend against Sutherland Sharks were:
Under 13: Wollongong won 4 - 1
Under 14: Wollongong won 2 nil
Under 15: Wollongong lost 3 - 2
Under 16: Wollongong won 4 - 1
Under 18: Wollongong won 1 nil

Wollongong teams play their next round against Penrith Nepean United at Elizabeth Park Bellambi with the 13s beginning at 9 am on Saturday June 27.

Stingrays too good for Stallions as 14s surprise

The Illawarra Stingrays women’s Premier League side continued its winning way with a 4 nil win over Marconi Stallions last Sunday. The youth sides picked up draws in the 12s and 14s while the 16s lost 2 – 1. The surprising result came from the 14s who held the table topping Stallions to a 1 all draw even though the Stingrays are sitting in 8th position.

Results of games between Illawarra Stingrays and Marconi Stallions at JJ Kelly Park were:
First grade: Illawarra won 4 nil
Under 16s: Illawarra lost 2 – 1
Under 14s: Illawarra drew 1 all
Under 12s: Illawarra drew 1 all

The Stingrays next round of games is away against Manly at Cromer Park on Sunday 28 June with the under 12s beginning at 9am.

Illawarra Hawks round up Mustangs in State League Basketball

In last weekend’s State League Basketball, the Illawarra Hawks took on the bottom placed Maitland Mustangs and Hawks fans expected their side to dominate from the outset.   It was not to be however, as the Mustangs led 27 to 22 at the main break. Stirred into action at half time the Hawks took charge in the last two quarters to run out winners by 71 – 60.

Top scorers for the Hawks were B Bonham (30), J Micallef (11) and B Dragun (9). For the Mustangs N Lovett scored 22 points followed by L Woodman (12) and M Garland (8).

The Hawks are just out of the play-off top two in Pool D with the Hawkesbury Jets undefeated and Macarthur Heat on the same win-loss record as the Hawks but just shading the Hawks on points for and against.
