Important Sunday for Illawarra Women’s football

This coming Sunday is one of the most important this year in women’s football. The Wollongong University women team is playing at Parklea at 2.15 pm in the State Cup Final against Cronulla. Also playing in the finals are the U11 Balgownie boys and in the U15 boys an all Illawarra final between Balgownie and Warilla.
 
As well on Sunday the Illawarra Stingrays are playing at home against Penrith Nepean United. A win by the Stingrays on the day will ensure that they will remain in Premier League next season. 

Results of last weekend’s games between Illawarra Stingrays and Manly at Cromer Park were:
Premier League: Illawarra won 4 nil
Reserve grade: Illawarra won 2 nil
Under 16s: Illawarra lost 3 – 2
Under 14s: Illawarra drew 1 all
Under 12s: Illawarra lost 3 nil

The Stingrays Premier League team currently tops the table while the Reserves are running fourth. The Stingrays next round of games against Penrith Nepean United will be played at JJ Kelly Park on Sunday July 5 with the under 12s beginning at 9am.

Leaders continue dominance in Illawarra Baseball

The leading three teams all had comfortable wins in round 12 fixtures of the 2009 Illawarra Baseball League premiership. Unbeaten Dapto Chiefs accounted for Kiama Braves 11-1 at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto while Berkeley Eagles defeated Northern Pirates 12-2 at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow. The remaining game produced a 12-0 win to second placed Wests Cardinals over Shoalhaven Mariners.

Pirates opened the game with a run in their first turn at bat, Chris Newbold batting in the run. The advantage was lost in the third inning where the Eagles offence blasted five runs on eight hits from the ten batters in the inning.

In the following four innings Eagles converted a further six runs but Pirates cause was not helped by a series of eight errors that allowed a total of six unearned runs to score.

The game went a full nine innings Eagles not registering the ten run margin until batting in the last. Eagles outhit Pirates 18-5, Claxton Shield team members Tim Atherton and Sam Thornton batted 3/5 while Chad Blanch batted 3 / 6 and 2RBI's. Newbold batted 1 / 2 with 1 RBI for Pirates.

Eagles’ pitchers had a combined 15 strikeouts in the game. Starter Joe Anson allowed one earned run on 3 hits in 4 innings striking out 6. Reliever Tim Beard allowed one hit, no earned runs with 5 strikeouts and closer Atherton allowed one hit, no earned runs in 2 innings striking out 4.

For Pirates Chris Pallamontagne pitched 2.2 innings in relief giving up no earned runs on 3 hits and closer John Noonan allowed 4 hits and one earned run in 3 innings.

Mariners were holding Cardinals to a 1-0 score after two innings but the floodgates opened in the third.  Cards capitalised on 3 Mariners errors to score 5 unearned runs in a total of 8 in the inning. A further three runs were added by Cards in the fourth.

Cards outhit Mariners 6-2, errors being Cards 2, Mariners 4. For Cards, Paul Trembearth 2 / 4, 1 RBI, (brother) Jeff Trembearth 1 / 3, 2 RBI's. Cards pitching - Blake Handley 3.2 innings, one hit, no earned runs, Jamie Simon  3.1 innings one hit, no earned runs (6 strikeouts).

Chiefs blasted their way to a 7-0 lead after two innings amassing 10 hits in the process. Starting pitcher Aaron Wirth was at his best for Chiefs pitching 5 innings and allowing no earned runs on just one hit while striking out 5. Reliever Jarrett Commane continued this effort pitching 3 innings and allowing one earned run on 2 hits.

Chiefs totalled 17 hits to Braves 3, Craig Leighton and Commane registering 3 hits apiece. Jamie Bird 2 / 5, 3RBI's, Stuart McCarthy 2 / 4, 2 RBI's and Ben Shepherd 2 / 5, 2 RBI's also made valuable contributions. Ben Griffin's hit batted in Braves only run in the eighth. (report from Frank Booth)

Slyders baseball team go to USA

The Slyders youth baseball team, a team of talented players from several Illawarra Baseball clubs, will head out later this week to play in an International Series in San Diego, California commencing on July 8. The tour is the culmination of some 30 months of fundraising efforts, an amount of around $70,000 being raised to fulfill a dream.

The team, which is made up of 16 and 17 years old members, will play against youth teams from Asia, Canada, Mexico and the United States of America in the five days long tournament organised by the United States Amateur Baseball Federation.

Following the tournament the team is scheduled to play a San Diego representative team that is scheduled to play at the World Boys tournament being held in Italy later in the year.

After playing these games the team is booked to visit some Major League Baseball games and facilities in San Diego and Los Angeles. This will be the second such tour by a Slyders team following a similar tour five years ago.

Coaches: Head Coach – Brett Single, Assist Coaches – Steve Single & Archie Paton.

Wollongong 13s surprise loss to Penrith in PYL soccer

Wollongong Premier Youth League teams had a very mixed day against Penrith Nepean United last weekend. The day did not begin well when the highly fancied Wollongong 13s lost the first game by 2 – 1 to the 10th placed Penrith side. This saw the Wollongong 13s drop from second to third spot on the ladder.

Wollongong’s 14s defeated Penrith Nepean 1 nil to retain 5th spot with Penrith dropping to 8th. In the 15s Penrith easily defeated Wollongong by 3 nil to leapfrog the local side into 6th while Wollongong dropped to 7th on goal difference. The ladder leading Wollongong 16s accounted for Penrith in a tougher than expected struggle to win by 1 nil. The 18s were to have played on the Sunday before the Premier League games but the game was called off due to the state of the ground.

Results for the round 17 played last weekend against Penrith Nepean United were: 

Under 13: Wollongong lost 2 - 1
Under 14: Wollongong won 1 nil
Under 15: Wollongong lost 3 nil 
Under 16: Wollongong won 1 nil
Under 18: washed out   

Wollongong teams play their next round against Marconi Stallions at Marconi Stadium with the 13s beginning at 9 am on Saturday July 4.

Illawarra Hawks soar over Bears in State League Basketball

In last weekend’s State League Basketball, the Illawarra Hawks took on the Norths Bears and were dominant throughout the match. The Hawks led 43 to 24 at half time and continued to control; the game in the second half to run out winners by 89 to 53. Top scorers for the Hawks were B Bonham (40) B Dragun (10) and J Micalleff (9).

The Hawks next game is against the Hornsby Spiders at 4pm at Beaton Park on Saturday July 4.

The Hawks are just out of the play-off top two in Pool D with the Hawkesbury Jets undefeated and Macarthur Heat on the same win-loss record as the Hawks but just shading the Hawks on points for and against. The Hawks will travel away to take on Macarthur Heat on July 11 in a game which is likely to decide the second play-off position.

Woonona tops Surf Life Saving Awards

Surf Life Saving Illawarra has held its annual Awards of Excellence night to recognise the invaluable contribution to the community each year by the Surf Life Saving organisation’s volunteers.  Peter Evert from Woonona Surf Life Saving Club was honoured with the ‘Ted Marshall Memorial Life Saver of The Year’ award. “This is the highest award given to any volunteer life saver in the Illawarra and is one that all aspire to” said Amanda Scott, Development Officer of Surf Life Saving Illawarra.

Mr Evert, said “I didn’t expect to win, there are so many volunteers within our organisation who each do a truly fantastic job. The movement is something I am very proud to be a part of.”

The Surf Life Saving ‘Illawarra Volunteer of The Year’ was awarded to club mate John McInally also from Woonona, recognising his work over the past season.  It was certainly Woonona’s night - the club also snared ‘Patrolling Club of The Year’ and ‘Illawarra Club of The Year’.

President of Woonona, Phill Geary said “our club has come a long way over the past few years – Peter and John have worked tirelessly and devoted countless hours to the running of the club each season – we’re very proud of their achievements and the efforts of all our club members and committee in attaining such a great result”.

Bulli’s Mikayla Morris took out the Illawarra Youth Life Saver of The Year category, Coalcliff’s Nyrelle Guyatt won the Age Manager of The Year and Harley Dreghorn from Helensburgh Stanwell Park again won Administrator of The Year. The Educator of The Year went to Craig St George from Corrimal.

Bulli again held the title of Surf Sports Club of The Year with members Cara Langendam claiming Female Athlete of The Year, Ryan O’Grady receiving Male Athlete of The Year, Dennis Allen receiving Competition Official of The Year and Downie Langthorne receiving Coach of The Year.

Also in Surf Sports was the Austinmer U23 Boat Crew who won the Team of The Year after an undefeated season, Wollongong City’s Mackenzie Hynard received the Male Junior Athlete of The Year and Taylah Davies from Thirroul won the Female Junior Athlete of The Year.

Selection Trials for Bodyboarding international event

The Brett Young Memorial Trials are to be staged at Cronulla Point from 4th – 5th of July. Trialists will compete for the honour of gaining one of the last four entries into the Shark Island Challenge 2009. For further details go to at http://sportslive.com.au/index.pl?page=3746
