Illawarra Stingrays Family Fun Day

On Sunday the 23rd August at J.J. Kelly Park the Illawarra Stingrays are celebrating season 2009 with a family day. The prize at the end of the day could see the Illawarra Stingrays becoming the first Women’s Premier League side from the local area to secure the Premiership Title.
The day will begin at 9.00am with the U12’s, followed by the U14’s at 10.10am and then the U16’s at 11.30 am.

The senior reserve grade side which has qualified for the semi finals then play at 1pm against arch rivals Manly. Then there will be the big one, the first grade game against Manly, which will hopefully see a win to secure the title.

There will be many activities on the day with a jumping castle for the kids, face painting and meet the players at 12 noon. At half time there will be the kick for cash and an opportunity to see who is the fastest junior female in the local competition.

The day as always is free to enter and we hope that you will be able to join us for a day of celebration. (Rob McKie)

Chiefs take first minor premiership since 1999

Dapto Chiefs captured their first Illawarra Baseball League minor premiership since 1999 when they defeated Shoalhaven Mariners 19-0 in the round 19 match played at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto on Saturday. With one round remaining Chiefs cannot lose their lead even if they lose to second placed Berkeley Eagles in the final round.

Other fixtures for the round saw Wests Cardinals defeat Northern Pirates 18-7 at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow while Eagles defeated Kiama Braves 6-1 at Gainsborough Reserve, Kiama Downs.

Pirates had established a 3-0 lead at the halfway point of their game but handed Cardinals a big lead in the top of the fifth where three errors allowed eight unearned runs to be scored. Brad Drain got the Bucs closer in the bottom of the fourth where his two run homer created an 8-5 score.

Cardinals went on to add three runs in the seventh and finished the game off with six more runs in the ninth.

Both teams had difficulties finding the handle on the ball making six errors each but Pirates effort was easily the most costly leading to a total of ten unearned runs. Cardinals’ Jamie Simon pitched the complete game conceding four earned runs on nine hits. Pirates’ starter Lachlan Crawley allowed 10 hits but no earned runs in his 5.0 innings.

Cardinals outhit Pirates 19-9, shortstop Nathan Grogan the standout for Cardinals batting 5 from 6 with 4 RBI’s. Chase Richardson contributed 3 / 5 in support while Chris Newbold batted 3 / 4 for Pirates.

Eagles got off to a good start with a homer from Tim Atherton and a conversion of Kaine Abbott’s double in the first inning. Braves came within a run scoring in the third on Evan Hayes’ RBI single but this would be their only conversion in the game.

Atherton batted in a second run in the fifth and there would be no more circles in the scorebook until three more runs in the ninth.

Eagle’s starter Hayden Beard featured with four innings for two hits and one earned runs striking out eight. Atherton closed with two innings for one hit. Braves reliever Aaron Sloan was their best allowing no earned runs on two hits in 3.0 innings.

Chiefs starting pitcher Aaron Mills might not have been handed the ball many times this season but he made the most of his opportunity allowing no earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Mitch Thompson and Ben Shepherd featured offensively with three hits and 4 RBI’s each.
