Bottomline
by John Bown

Here we go again

More talk about Dapto’s future. The only thing I can see different about the latest talk of expansion at West Dapto is that 46 000 people could be housed down that way, not in a few years but three to four decades

Even though Wollongong City Council is now on record as saying the draft LEP for stages one and two will be gazetted before the end of the year this will only cover Kembla Grange, Darkes Road, Wongawilli and Horsley.

But where’s any mention of fixing up the terrible traffic snarls that occur down that way, particularly in Bong Bong Road?

Talk is cheap, so they say, but getting the traffic chaos attended to certainly won’t be.

West Dapto development is now in the same status as the lack of parking spaces in the city and the City Mall!

ROTARY’S SPECIAL YOUTH PROGRAM

Once again our district’s Rotary Clubs will get behind the RYDA program which is held in NSW, South Australia and Tasmania and is aimed at fostering youth driver awareness.

Last year some 1500 students from 21 schools in the area attended the event and this year’s it will be held at the Croome Road Sporting Complex at Albion Park.

Aimed at reducing the number of teenagers killed and injured on our roads each year RYDA offers a one day school excursion and involves six interactive sessions presented by road safety professionals

RYDA will run from Monday 26 October to Friday 13 November.

I TOLD YOU SO

It comes as no surprise that WIN Stadium won’t host the St George – Illawarra team’s semi final and that it will be played up the road at Kogarah and unfortunately this will always be the case.

Pity though when you consider how many of the team come from around here.

But it’s just another outcome of the Steelers Club directors at the time not going Super League and being forced to combine with St George.

LEAVE THE CANTEENS ALONE

The people who give of their time to operate our school canteens have every right to be up in arms over new food inspection programs being pushed through local councils by the State Government.

It’s absolutely scandalous that school canteens will have to pay as much – around $400 a time – as registered food outlets.

And what’s worse is that our city council mandarins seem to have gleefully accepted their new right to charge these exorbitant prices.

Next we will have sporting clubs being asked to meet fees for selling a few pies, hot dogs, sweets and drinks at weekend junior sporting events, the monies from which are usually put towards the clubs having to also pay for the use of various venues.

NOT A WELCOMING MAT

Come up and see the views and take in what’s on show at the Jumbulla Aboriginal Discovery Centre at the now opened – at long last – Southern Gateway Centre at Bulli Tops is what we’re being asked to do, but make sure you have plenty of cash with you.

It’s going to cost adults $15 to enter the museum and kids will be charged $10.50.

That’s $51 for a mum and dad and two kids most of which is being spent to enable you to catch up on Aboriginal history.

WHAT NEXT?

A young student bashed to death in a school yard, 50 000 families who can’t meet their mortgage costs, and more than 1000 doctors claiming millions of dollars in Medicare benefits, one as much as $1.3 million for allegedly seeing more than150 patients each working week.

It was all part of the gruesome news in our weekend newspapers and life in general seems to be getting worse.

What’s wrong with our society? There just doesn’t seem to be any discipline any more and governments are next to useless.

But never mind as you drive by some of our schools in the next two years you will see uncle Kevin’s signs telling us just how much of our money he has or is about to give them, but I’m also willing to bet that in that two years you won’t see many significant changes at the schools.
