Wests Cardinals overcome Dapto Chiefs to go to grand final

Defending premier Wests Cardinals qualified for the 2009 Illawarra Baseball League first grade Grand Final with a hard fought 5-3 win over minor premier Dapto Chiefs in the major semi final played on Saturday at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto.  With the game locked at 3-3 at the completion of nine innings an outcome was reached in the tenth innings when Cardinals ran in two runs.

The outstanding performance of the game came from Cardinals’ Jamie Simon who not only pitched all ten innings to record the win but also drove in the winning runs with his two out double that scored both runs in the final inning.

The game saw Cardinals take a 3-0 advantage in the fourth innings on Nathan Grogan’s two run hit after an RBI hit by Cam Thompson in the second. Chiefs came back with one in the fourth and were on even terms in the sixth where Cardinals made four errors allowing two unearned runs to score. Cardinals mettle was tested in the bottom of the ninth but managed to defend a bases loaded / no outs situation and shutout Chiefs from scoring.

Chiefs outhit Cardinals 11-9 and made fewer errors at 4-5. Hitting was evenly distributed throughout the batting line-ups of both teams but Craig Leighton, Jarrett Commane and Troy Green recorded two hits each for Chiefs. Commane also pitched a commendable seven innings in relief allowing four hits and two earned runs and striking out eight.

The minor semi final produced a surprise start by underdogs Northern Pirates who held a 5-2 score after two innings. A horror third innings however saw opponents Berkeley Eagles tally ten runs and gain a lead they would not surrender, Eagles running out 15-8 winners.

With the sea breeze favouring the hitters at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy Meadow a season high five homers were despatched beyond the confines. Brad Drain set the scene for Pirates with his three run shot in the second followed soon after by Luke Rich’s two run effort in the fifth.

Eagles’ John Allender contributed two solo homers in the second and fifth innings while Kaine Abbott batted in three runs with his shot in the fourth. These two hitters and Chad Blanch recorded three hits each in Eagles total of 16.
