Dear WOL Editor,
In regards to the Shire lashes rezoning bid, Mercury 16.
Sutherland Shire Council are right in criticizing Wollongong City Council for this documented lobbied Review of 7d Hacking River Protected Environment.
SSC are legally correct by saying the studies recommended by the Helensburgh Commission of Inquiry in 1994 have not been carried out. A fact that seems to escape Wollongong Council and the lobbyists.
Yet Jonathon Harris, President of one Lobby Group comments on Youtube, “This is a case of people simply wanting to build on blocks they have purchased, and being prevented by neighbours who are looking for spurious excuses to prevent them…. Get real, Otford, there are people just as passionate about the environment that you are, who simply want the privilege of building on their land, the same privilege you already have.”
Well, Mr Harris, those people had the privilege of buying property in a designated residential area. Why didn’t you and the Lobby Group and others, do the same? A question they hope no one will ask because it makes their arguments fall apart.
The other big question that gets avoided as well, is why do you need to have pollution ponds? If you need all that, why build there?
The best way to protect the environment these days is not build where it can be affected.
Yet he hypocritically dismisses the environment in the article by stating the Commission found this land has no value at all from a flora and fauna point of view. So much for being passionate about the environment.
What needs pointing out is that the former Wollongong Council opposed any development in the 7d. Yet, Mr Harris has faith in unelected administrators. What he doesn’t point out is that one of them was also head of the NSW Planning Dept at the time of the Helensburgh Expansion Inquiry and that person was for the development.
That person still is. This is all documented.
As for children signing petitions or submissions, what’s wrong with that?
They want to see the Hacking River Protected Environment when they grow up.
They also want their children and generations to come to see it too.
Yours sincerely,
Alan Bond
