Sydney Water Surf Series Round 4 at Towradgi
Three rounds of the annual Sydney Water Premiership Series have been completed. Surf life savers from clubs in NSW and Queensland have been competing in the 4 round competition from October 31 to December 19. Events include ski, board, swim and run, beach sprints, flags and relays.
The fourth and final round is to be held at Towradgi on Saturday December 19
Wollongong Hawks chase NBL basketball title
After 13 games of the National Basketball League the Wollongong Hawks led the competition with Perth Wildcats with both teams having scored 8 wins.
The Wollongong Hawks home games, tipping off at 7.30pm, at WIN Entertainment Centre for the rest of the preliminary rounds are as follows:
Saturday December 12, v Perth
Thursday December 31, v Adelaide
Wednesday January 6, v New Zealand Breakers
Saturday January 16, v Gold Coast
Wednesday January 20, v Townsville
Saturday February 6, v Gold Coast
Friday February 12, v Melbourne
The Hawks also have eight away games for the rest of the preliminary rounds. These are against Cairns (December 18), Gold Coast (December 20), Melbourne (December 26), Perth (January 2), Melbourne (January 8), Townsville (January 22), New Zealand (February 4) and Adelaide (February 13).
Illawarra & South Coast junior cricket batting and bowling honours
After 4 rounds of the combined South Coast and Illawarra junior cricket competitions there have been seven centuries in 16A and four in the 14A. The best score in the 16 B competition has been 96. In rounds three and four in the last month, both Jacob Hand (Thirroul in round 3) and Ryan Maguire (Oak Flats in round 4) scored 103 not out. Nathan Brown (Oak Flats) scored another 102 not out in Round 4 to complement a similar score he made in Round 1. Also among the 16A century makers were Ben Chapman (Balgownie in round 3), Kurtis Trindall (Corrimal in round 4) and Rahil Verma (Wests in Round 4) all retiring at 100 not out.
In the 14A competition, Tyler Edwards (Wests Ilawarra in Round 3) scored 100 not out while Jake Edwards (Shellharbour in Round 4) also retired at the same score. Balgownie’s Chelsea Veney unluckily made 99 in round 3.
Best bowling in rounds 3 and 4 of the 16A competition came from Trent Brownlee from Oak Flats who took an astonishing 5 wickets for 8 runs in both innings against Shellharbour in Round 3. Also taking 5 wickets was Jackson Stewart (For Thirroul in round 3), Stuart McNair (Thirroul in round 4) and Rhys Noronha (Dapto in round 4).
In the 16B competition, Mark Mura (Kiama in round 3), Andrew Saad (Wests Illawarra in round 4) and Jacob Lambert (Albion Park in round 3) all took 5 wickets in the last month.
In the 14A competition, Byron Malby of Port Kembla had the outstanding figures of 9 wickets for 8 runs in round 4 against Oak Flats. Also in form in round 3 were Wests Illawarra players Joel Moore with 6 for 12 runs (2nd innings against Helensburgh) and Sam Benson with 5 for 14 (first innings).
Robert Hurley to take over Grant Hackett’s mantle?
21 year old Robert Hurley’s recent win in 1500m freestyle at Singapore World Cup meet over 1500m when he defeated Olympic champion Oussama Mellouliled Australian coach Alan Thompson to say that Australia’s strength in the 400m and 1500m may not have finished with the retirement of Grant Hackett. He stated that Hurley and 20 year old Ryan Napolean who is also emerging as a distance freestyle contender could provide the next generation of Australian long distance performers.

Follow Illawarra players in Baseball’s Claxton Shield
Illawarra utility players Trent D’Antonio and Tim Atherton are in NSW Patriots team in Baseball’s interstate Claxton Shield series which is currently being played across the country. This is D’Antonio’s seventh consecutive tournament while Atherton is playing his third.
