Your Business
by Paul Wright

Success is proportional to pain

As we come to the end of the year I trust that you will take the time to take stock, review the past 12 months and make some plans for 2010

It is my custom to take several weeks during the Christmas New Year period to do some “heavy lifting” in the planning, review, goal setting areas.

In the lead up to this time I have been re-reading a very valuable work titled, How to Reach Your Life Goals by Peter J Daniels.

Daniel’s story is inspiring. He was illiterate into his mid-twenties and yet went on to become a very successful property developer, author and sought after motivational speaker.

You can do your own research on him and certainly I highly recommend any of his books, particularly the one mentioned above.

Anyway, back to the point of the story.

Daniel makes an interesting observation, borne out of his own life experiences, about success. He says success is proportional to the amount of pain you are willing to bear to achieve the goals you have set.

Yeah, I know …

PAIN and more PAIN. Hmmmm, not a very popular thought.

Yet, as I reflect on my life’s journey I agree with Daniel’s assessment.
Not everything goes according to plan (I wish it did). What about your life?

What are the areas or aspects of your life that are holding you back?

Is it a lack of integrity or commitment?

Now wait a minute Paul, I can hear someone say, “I’ve always been a person of my word.”

Well, if you have that’s great; good on you.

But let’s reality test that for a moment.

  • Are you always punctual for appointments – whether business or social?

  • Have you ever made a decision to exercise and not done it consistently?

Now please understand this is not about bringing anyone under condemnation. However, it is about recognising, as Daniel’s says, “…we often over-ride a personal commitment in a way we would rarely do with a commitment made to someone else”.

“The key here is transparency with integrity” and it is important to note that “you will not respect your own inner integrity if you break your own commitments to yourself”.

Integrity is also key in developing willpower.

Further, and very interestingly, the following go hand in hand

  • Punctuality (respect for time) and willpower
  • Tidiness (respect for order) and willpower
  • Positive mental attitude (respect for the mind) and a strong will
  • Lack of punctuality and obesity (or better said, punctuality and ability to control weight)

Why don’t you take a few minutes over a cuppa to reflect on your own life and see if there are other connections you can make. Did you find any? Drop a line to paul@rightteam.com.au

By recognising and working at these connections we can strengthen our willpower and resolve in other areas of our lives and business.

For example, consider an overweight person who is also habitually lacking in punctuality. By working on the punctuality problem they will find that they will begin to overcome the weight problem as well.

At this point you might be thinking, “Well, so what, Paul. What does this have to do with me?”

Well, everything, actually.

Because integrity is a key foundation stone without which whatever is built will eventually crumble into insignificance.

And I am sure you do want your life to count for something, to mean something, don’t you?

So, in closing, a really good question to ask your self to check your motives and desires is:

“What proportion of my life am I prepared to pay in exchange for accomplishing my nominated desire?”

In other words, do your desires reflect just what you would like to have happen or what you are prepared to sacrifice to have happen?

Confronting, uncomfortable questions that expose your willingness or otherwise to get out of your comfort zone …

But so be it. After all, your life is not a dress rehearsal. You have one show and it had better be your best. The choice is yours.

Christmas Greetings and a bonus juicy bit of info for Your Business readers.

Firstly the juicy bit. Yeah, I know you want to hear about that first!

If there was a way you could travel more (for business or leisure) and in style for less dollars because you had access to the “inside track” - would that be of interest to you? What about if you were able to generate an additional global income stream – you’d want to know about it – wouldn’t you?

Well, now you can and you can do so from home, in your own time (part time or full time). To find out more check out www.newtraveltrends.com

And, if you like what you see, drop me a line to

and make sure you include your name and your best contact number and what time of day is best to call you.

Finally, this is a warm Christmas greeting to you and your family. I am confident that whatever 2009 held for you, that 2010 will be a bigger, better, more productive and prosperous year for you.

Remember your past (in this case 2009) does not have to determine your future. You can create the life you desire to live and I pray that you will begin that journey if you have not begun already.

Go hard, live life to the full and God Bless.
