Rotarians on the go

Local Rotarians will be kept busy in the coming weeks with their involvement in a number of key projects, all of which will involve the local community

The annual Model United Nations Assembly will be held at the Nan Tien Temple on Saturday 15 May and nominations from contesting schools will close on Friday 12 March.

A public speaking exercise for teams of three from various schools, MUNA is a big event in the Rotary calendar.

Competing schools come from throughout Wollongong, the Illawarra, South Coast, western suburbs and Sydney.

The winning two schools are then sponsored by the local Rotary district for the national final in Canberra in mid August.

Also being planned is the annual RYDA event to be held again at Shellharbour.

This is a teenagers road safety awareness campaign which also attracts schools from throughout the Illawarra.

RYDA organiser David Hooper says the event will have even greater significance this year following the recent spate of road accidents, many involving younger drivers.

Day out for seniors

Then there’s the big day out for seniors hosted by Dapto Rotary Club and held at Don’s Farm in West Dapto. The day includes musical entertainment with choirs from two local schools helping to entertain those present and there’s a barbecue lunch which comes free of charge.

Organiser Keith Masters says plans for the event, which will be held on March 22, are well in hand and he expects between 250 and 400 to attend.

Dapto Rotary Club’s 50th jubilee celebration will be held on Friday 4 June, and already many past members have flagged their intention of being present. The Governor of NSW is on the invitation list, along with the District Governor of Rotary and a number of civic representatives.
