Kiama Braves took off till Eagles swooped in Illawarra baseball
Kiama Braves made one of their best ever starts to a game scoring five runs in the first inning of their round 4 clash against Berkeley Eagles on Saturday but they could not capitalise on the effort and eventually went down 12-5.
In the eight innings game played at Gainsborough Reserve, Kiama Downs the Eagles started their fightback with a two run homer by Kaine Abbott in the third and then got on top of the home team with a five run rally in the fifth.
Eagle’s starter Josh Doyle recovered well after his loose first inning by pitching 4.1 innings for five hits and five earned runs. Reliever Chris Morgan pitched 3.2 hitless shutout innings. Braves five hits all occurred in the first, Matt Dubois batted in the first two runs with his double and other RBI hits came from Brett Single and Matt Sneddon.
Daniel Bradley featured in Eagles total of 15 hits batting 4 from 5 with 4 RBI’s, John Allender contributed 3 / 4. Unbeaten leaders Dapto Chiefs were held to a 3-0 lead after six innings by winless Shoalhaven Mariners at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto but Chiefs came home strongly with three in the seventh and a further four in the eight for a 10-0 result.
Matt McCann had a strong outing as Chiefs starting pitcher completing five innings and allowing just one hit. Mariners’ starter Taylor Medhurst pitched 6.1 innings for eight hits and five earned runs.
Chiefs outhit the opposition 13-2 Mitchell Thompson batting 3 from 5 with one RBI while Jarrett Commane and Rod Angel registered two hits and an RBI each.
Northern Pirates and Wests Cardinals were scoreless in the first two innings of their match at Thomas Dalton Park, Fairy but a breakthrough came in a big way when Cards rampaged with six runs in the third. The Bucs managed one run in the fourth before Cards were at it again in the sixth.
At this point eight runs were added from 13 batters that appeared in the inning, Lee Vlasoff and Ben Garvey batting in two runs apiece. With Pirates adding one run in the seventh a 14-2 score resulted and game called.
Cardinals recorded 15 hits to Pirates 4, Jamie Simon batting 3 from 4 and Trent D’Antonio 3 from 5. Dean Newson batted 2 from 3 with one RBI for Pirates. Jamie Simon pitched six innings for Cardinals and allowed one earned run on 3 hits with 8 strikeouts.
Round 5 fixtures scheduled for May 8 are Cardinals vs. Braves at Cringila Community Park, Chiefs vs. Pirates at Hector Harvey Reserve, Dapto and Eagles vs. Mariners at Eagles Field, Fred Finch Park, Berkeley. First grade games commence at 2.00pm. Report from Frank Booth.

Wollongong basketball roller Tristan Knowles stars in European Cup win
Aussie Roller Tristan Knowles has starred for his Spanish club BSR Valladolid in the final of the Willi Brinkmann Cup to claim the title of European Champion.
Defeating Aldas Amfiv emphatically 100-67, Knowles scored a game high of 38 points comprising 9-of-10 from the field, 4-of-6 from 3-point range and was deadly at the charity stripe with 8-8 free throws.

This is BSR Valladolid's first major championship win in its history which coincides with Knowles's arrival at the club this year. Knowles was the tournament highest point scorer and capped the tournament off with selection to the All Star Five.
This is Knowles's second Willi Brinkmann Cup having guided Italian club ASS Stefano to victory in 2006, which coincidentally, was also against Aldas Amfiv.

Roller Hawks’ Knowles and Stibners in Australian World Cup Team
Basketball Australia has announced the 12 athletes that have been selected to defend Australia’s Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team’s title at the 2010 Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May. The team includes Wollongong’s Tristan Knowles and Brett Stibners.
Ten members of the 2009 gold medal-winning team will line up against Canada, Italy and hosts Great Britain from May 27 – 30.
The Australians open their account against Canada on May 27 before facing Italy on May 28 and Great Britain in the final game of the preliminary rounds on May 29. The Finals will be held on May 30.

South Coast Wolves 18s do well in Premier Youth League football
After 10 rounds the South Coast Wolves under 18 Premier Youth League team is in 3rd spot after winning two and drawing three games in the last five rounds. All of the other 4 youth teams were out of the top five with the best being the 13s in 8th spot and 16s in 9th position.

Winter Cricket Camp
The Bradman Foundation has organised a Winter Skills and Fitness Program for those keen boys and girls ages eight to 18 years, who wish to keep up their cricket skills and general fitness over the winter months.
