Bulli SLSC crowned

Bulli Surf Life Saving Club received the prestigious award of 2010 Club of the Year at the recent Surf Life Saving Illawarra Awards of Excellence night

The award acknowledges the all round strength of the club in lifesaving, education, member development, management and surf sports.

Club President Keith Caldwell said the award was a very special honour as it shows the all-round development of the club over the years with lot of hard work put in by dedicated members to make sure the club is moving in the right direction when dealing with surf life saving procedures and policies.

“People see us as a surf sports club, which is great, but they don’t see the effort put in by our patrolling members, our education team in training our lifesavers, or the work that the management committee does in a voluntary capacity to maintain and encourage membership right through from the junior section to the seniors,” he said.

“I must also thank a great bunch of loyal sponsors who have supported the club over many years injecting much needed funds to help us survive.  We had finalists in every category on the night which is a testament to the development of our members.”

The club also won Surf Sports Club of the Year and members received individual accolades, with Mali Taylor and Harrison Green winning the Junior Female & Junior Male Athlete of the Year respectively.

Mitchell Fagerstrom was awarded the Senior Male Athlete of the Year and Kevin Starling won the Competition Official of the Year.

The successful U19 Male Boat Crew won the Team of the Year’ from the club’s Aussie gold medal winning U19 Male Rescue Tube Rescue team.

On the same weekend as the awards night, the club excelled at the Australian Surf Life Saving Pool Rescue Championships in Melbourne. With a large but inexperienced team (26 athletes) the club finished 6th in the club point-score and won 8 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze medals. Some of the club’s U14, U15 and U17 members won their first national medal.

It should be a big night coming up at the club’s presentation night on the 26 June at Bulli Workers Club where its club members will celebrate a successful 2009-2010 season.
