Bottomline

Here we go again

Another Federal election

It’s on 21 August the Federal election we just have to have and at this stage it’s anyone’s guess as to who will win.

People I have been discussing it with don’t seem to care who wins, they just don’t have any faith in our politicians, and particularly for the two seeking to be the Prime Minister.

I think that locally Joanna Gash will retain her seat for the Liberals and Sharon Bird would be at somewhat short odds to do the same in Cunningham for Labor.

But if you can believe what you read in the major media it will be a close affair and that somewhat useless debate between Julia and Tony on national TV didn’t help at all.

What a waste of time and money!

What is an ETS?

It’s a good question that most people couldn’t answer. Just what is an ETS?

Well it stands for Emissions Trading Scheme and our current Prime Minister Julia – get that smirk of your face – Gillard believes a group of selected citizens can come up with the answer to what’s needed to control our up and down climate.

Control of our weather patterns over all the years I can remember has been in the hands of what the weather wants to do and all the talk about how we can improve its consistency etc has never come to anything.

For instance, the weather people predicted a week ago that we would get rain at some time every day and we didn’t.

Once the four seasons we were used to – summer, autumn, winter and spring - pretty well stuck to suggested weather patterns but not any more.

So Julia don’t waste more of our money on yet another useless public relations scam.

A job well done

Let’s not forget the wonderful input into government and particularly our community, down south anyway, of retiring politician Jennie George.

The local Federal member down that way since 2001 has called it quits but leaves behind her some wonderful inputs into her electorate.

All the best in retirement Jennie.

Gigliotti and Tabak victims of ICAC

At long last ICAC have made a decision regarding those locals accused of being somewhat dishonest in their association with late Wollongong City Council.

It has been recommended that former councillor Frank Gigliotti be sent to jail after being found guilty of two counts of intentionally giving misleading evidence to the ICAC hearing in 2008.

And developer Glen Tabak has copped a $2500 fine and given a two-year good behaviour bond for making a false statement to the inquiry.

Two former councillors Kiril Janovski and Zeki Esen have been cleared of charges against them.

It’s taken too long for these outcomes to be announced so perhaps now we can get the chance to again re-elect the people want to be our local councillors!!

Stay away Kiril

While I am glad to see you finally get a chance to speak up against charges laid by ICAC against you in 2008 and to see you clear your name I wouldn’t even consider wanting to see you run again for city council if and when we ever get one of our own.

You and your Labor colleagues did enough damage to our city when you held power and even contemplating standing as an independent won’t erase those horrible memories.

Just be glad your name has been cleared and stay in the shadows.

Another blow to ratepayers

The suggestion that municipal rates are about to skyrockets leaves one cold.

What with the surge in the cost of electricity, gas and water we householders don’t need another kick in the financial backside.

Perhaps if the Local Government Minister had a closer look at how our councils manage their money we might be better off.

But the pollies win out

And while we residents face increasing living costs I notice our state politicians are about to receive increases to their allowances and corporate credit cards.

MPs who live 35km or more from Sydney will see their “visits to the city” allowances rise by $253 a night when staying in our state capital.

This will make all our residents who have to travel daily to work in and around Sydney very happy, I’m sure.

And Racing, too?

I read with some bewilderment recently that our state government might cough up $150 million to promote the merger of the Australian Jockey Club and Sydney Turf Club.

What a cheek and yet another slap in the face for ratepayers, most of whom never go near a horse track.
