Baseball’s Kiama Braves breast cancer fund raiser

The round 17 fixtures of the 2010 Illawarra Baseball League premiership were all washed out due to venues suffering from the effects of midweek rain but the deferred round 7 fixture between Kiama Braves and Northern Pirates managed to go ahead thanks largely to the hard working efforts of Braves officials.

The day was scheduled by the Braves club as a promotional fundraiser for Breast Cancer and managed to raise in excess of $2500 which was a fantastic effort by all concerned. Everything was coloured pink from game balls to players’ caps to umpires accessories.

Pirates won the game 11-7 outhitting Braves 13-8. The fluorescent pink baseballs however, did not help Braves cause with ten errors committed in the seven innings game, five occurring in the sixth innings. As a result of the win
Pirates move into the top four on 47% relegating Braves to fifth on 42%. Other positions are as per table below.

Braves started well with four runs in the bottom of the second - three scoring on Matthew Sneddon's one out double.
Pirates tied the game in the top fourth where five errors created the four unearned runs.

Braves were 7-4 ahead after they batted the bottom of the inning but the floodgates opened up in the sixth where Pirates scored five. Some power hitting saw Andrew Clifford slam a three run homer converting hits by Al Michaelis and Matt Sainsbury and Chris Newbold followed up with a solo shot.

Pirates added two more in the seventh before time and game was called.

A home run derby was also held on the day and Chris Newbold was the victor despatching four pitches deep out of the park. (Report from Frank Booth).
