Wollongong Hawks tip off well in NBL
In their first game for the 2010/11 season, the Wollongong Hawks have scored a gritty 83-77 victory over the Gold Coast Blaze at the WIN Entertainment Centre in Wollongong. Wollongong seemed to have wrapped up the game with just over two minutes remaining, but found themselves clinging to a two-point edge with 15 seconds to play. Adam Gibson and James Maye gave the visitors a last gasp chance with consecutive buckets, before local product Tyson Demos and import Gary Ervin sealed it from the free-throw line.
Ervin finished with a game-high 27 points in his NBL debut, while Dave Gruber didn't lose a step after being promoted to the starting line-up, energising his team with 16 points and seven boards. The duo linked up for the play of the game late in the third quarter as Ervin threaded the lob for a sensational alley-oop.
James Harvey had ten of his team-high 20 points for the Blaze during a frantic second quarter before fouling out late in the fourth with Wollongong ahead by eight points. Wollongong Hawks 83 (Ervin 27, Gruber 16, Saville 15) defeated Gold Coast Blaze 77 (Harvey 20, Petrie 14, Gibson 12, Maye 11)

BULLI TEAM: Downie Langthorne (Capt/Coach), Matthew Crilley, Jake Hogarth, Ben Denner, Sean White, Mitchell Fagerstrom, Hannah Minogue, Bernadette Cardillo & Ingrid Cardillo (Liaison
Officer/Photographer) Downie Langthorne was already in Alexandria as he was representing AUSTRALIA at the International competition which began on Wednesday 6 October. This is the 8th time he has represented Australia in Surf Life Saving.
President Keith Caldwell said: “Our club is very proud of our involvement in the World Life Saving Championships. It is an event which runs over 6 days with 3 days of pool rescue competition and then 3 days of surf/beach events.
The club first attended the 1980 championships in Bali, got another taste of it in 2000 at Manly and since then we have competed at the last 4 championships in the USA 2002, Italy 2004, Lorne Victoria 2006 and Germany 2008 winning a total of 26 medals.
I know the team has been excited about experiencing the culture and history of Egypt plus meeting lifesavers from all over the world. Logistically it has been a challenge to get the team, craft and tent to Egypt.”
