Wollongong Hawks sweep NBL’s monthly awards

After a strong start to the current NBL season the Wollongong Hawks have swept the National Basketball League’s monthly awards after Gary Ervin and Gordie McLeod were named the Player and Coach of the Month for October respectively in the iiNet NBL Championship.
Ervin, who joined the Hawks as an import guard this season,  has been superb during the first weeks of the new campaign and through October led the NBL in scoring at 23.8 points per game as well as averaging 5.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds.  He shot 44% from the field and 43% from three-point range to help the Hawks to a 3-1 record.
Ervin took out the award in a landslide after receiving 58 votes to put him well ahead of Sydney’s Julian Khazzouh in second (29) and Townsville’s Luke Schenscher in third (10).
"Our team deserves this award,” said Ervin when told of the honour.  “We've had some ups and downs with injuries and not having our complete squad yet, but we've been able to put together some good basketball games and things have come together well so far."

"My teammates and coaches have faith in what I do on the court and I feel the same with the group. We play within our system and we work to our strengths.

"Sav (Glen Saville) changed the game last week, Oscar (Forman) has been tearing it up and Laz (Larry Davidson) has been huge for us too. We've seen (Tyson) Demos and (Tim) Coenraad come in and give us that spark off the bench. It could be any one of us each night that plays big, but as long as we continue playing good ball as a team, we'll do well."
Last season’s Coach of the Year winner, McLeod took out a tight race for October’s monthly coaching honours after receiving 52 votes to poll just ahead of New Zealand’s Andrej Lemanis (47).  Gold Coast’s Joe Wright came in third with 14 votes.
Despite his team being tipped to finish out of playoff contention in a pre-season poll of all NBL coaches, McLeod helped his team to a surprising 3-1 record for the month of October, including wins over Gold Coast, Townsville and Adelaide.
“The award is a reflection on the efforts of the entire team,” McLeod said.  “To handle the adversity we’ve already seen so far this season and to be where we’re at right now on the ladder is a testament to the guys.
“We’ve had a number of injuries and it’s been a big ask for the guys to step up, especially on the road.  As long as we stay consistent and focused on our goals we put ourselves in the best opportunity to win games.”
The NBL’s Player and Coach of the Month for October took into account Rounds 1 to 3 inclusive. All NBL Head Coaches and accredited media were eligible to vote for the awards.
