It’s all about getting results

The DMW Group’s new GM, Jason Keir, discusses his business and personal philosophies with WollongongOnline

How long have you lived in the area?   I grew up in the Shellharbour area, then moved away for around 5 years with various roles, and have been back in the area for the last 5 years

Hobbies / Passions? Sport, particularly cricket and surfing and of course watch my son grow up

The hardest thing I’ve ever done was watch my wife give birth, powerless to add any real value

Life/business philosophy “be passionate, professional and principled” and “enjoy what you do … or do something else”

At school I was too concerned about my grades

I wish I knew the answers to a lot more questions

I’m good at starting things

I’m bad at finishing everything I started!

I often wonder what my 18-month-old son is thinking

Describe your business … what makes it different/better:
Getting the right people into your business and ensuring that they are highly productive is vital for any organisation. We have been doing this successfully in the Illawarra for over 26 years which has given us an unparalleled level of local knowledge, range of services and professional expertise

How long have you worked in the area? I joined the organisation around 6 months ago

Short term goals? This year’s focus is on our upcoming move to the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus. This represents a significant milestone in our business and provides us with a great catalyst to continue to be a provider of innovative HR solutions to Wollongong and beyond

What about 5 years? Very simple, our goal is for sustained business growth based around exceptional service delivery and innovative products.

How long in current business? The DMW Group has been operating since 1982

Your latest project is? Refining our customer relationship management model

What you love about your work? Achieving tangible results

What you would improve about the area/or your work? No one area in particular, I’m a firm believer in constantly reviewing and refining every part of your business

Who has been a mentor? Any other business influences?  I don’t have one mentor in particular, that said I have worked with and for some great business people over the years and I would like to think I’ve been able to take key learning’s from all these individuals.

Has your family/partner been a help? Immeasurably! it’s a cliché I know, but  irrespective of your chosen career to be truly affective over a long period of time you need to have an effective work life balance. This is different for everyone but for me my wife and family are what really keep me sane.

What business books do you read? With a young family reading has certainly taken a back seat in recent years. One of this years resolutions, I need to read more!

What formal qualifications do you have? I have a Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and management majors) and a Masters of Commerce specialising in Human Resource Management all from the University of Wollongong
