Hurley cracks PBs again at Queensland Swim Champs; Pel's bronze

Wollongong's Robert Hurley has surprised many, including his coach, by scoring personal bests (PBs) in his first two events at the Queensland long course (50m pool) swimming championships being held this week.

While Hurley came 6th in his first event, the 200m freestyle, won by Lin Zhang of China he recorded a time of 1.49.96 which knocked an astonishing 1.19 secs off his previous best.

In his second event on second day of the meet, the 100m backstroke, Hurley was just edged out in the last ten metres by the top ranked Australian, Ashley Delaney, to finish second. In doing so he knocked over 1.5 secs off his previous best.

The PBs are quite astonishing as Hurley is in hard training in preparation for the Australian Championships, which are the Olympic qualifiers, in March. He is to compete in the 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle events later in the meet this week.

Cameron Pel of Bomaderry took out bronze in the 50m freestyle multi-disability event.

Cullen shows the way in junior cricket

The last round before the holiday break of the Illawarra and South Coast Junior cricket competitions were played last Saturday (without rain!).

In the 16As, Corrimal's top three batsmen were in great form against Lake Illawarra. Openers Cullen and Fuller had an opening stand of 121 before Fuller was dismissed for 66. Cullen then reached 75 before having to retire under the one day rules. First drop McGinnes also contributed a well compiled 38no to see Corrimal reach a mammoth 2/194 off its 30 overs. In the chase, Lake Illawarra found the mountain too high and were all out for 96 after 27 overs. Best for Corrimal in the bowlers was spinner Dunn who took 4/5 off 5 overs.
