Happiness: The Fundamentals

There are many things that need to come together in order to create a happy life

The following points are the fundamentals to our internal thinking and well being. If you’re truly looking for happiness then these concepts are a wonderful place to start.

1. Taking responsibility for your own life is always at the top of my list for people looking to make changes and improve their lives. Your results and the position you find yourself in right now will give you the realisation that you control the outcomes in your world. Take a look around, believe it or not, you have created what you see. Please don’t take this out of context, I’m not saying things that didn’t work out are your fault, I’m saying you have the ability to change and the ability to step up and take responsibility.

2. How you perceive your own situation also has a massive effect on our individual level of happiness, two individuals in the same situation will always have two different perceptions. Our happiness is a direct result of how we perceive things. Recently my partner and I went to Thailand to get married, we had the most amazing time and while we were there we noticed how wonderfully happy the people were. They are generally very poor, many can’t afford schooling or books and yet they are simply delighted to be alive. They are welcoming and will share with you what they do have. Their perception of their situation is that they are well off. They are truly lucky people to have happiness ingrained in their culture.

3. Our communication skills also have an impact as they allow us to give and accept love, respect, and dispel things like guilt or anger. Effective communication can negate nearly all unpleasantness. What emotions are you experiencing on a regular basis and how do you need to communicate differently to change what you are experiencing?

4. Having a vision for your life and a reason to get out of bed each day has been proven to lift our spirits and lighten our moods. How do you think Nelson Mandela survived 27 years in prison? I imagine it has a lot to do with his vision keeping him alive. Knowing that he was meant to do greater things than simply die in a cold prison cell. What is your vision for a brighter future and how are you creating it today?

5. Also, the people we associate with on a daily basis will have a large impact on our emotional state. Are you associating with people that lift you up, people that inspire you and make you want to be a better person? Or are your associates sapping all your energy by standing on your shoulders, putting down your ideas or simply ignoring your flare and individuality? Choose your associates wisely, and if happiness is high on the list, make sure your spending time with happy people!

6. I’m sure you will never guess the last concept, it’s quite simple really, have fun! Make sure each day you engage in an activity that totally captivates you and you thoroughly enjoy. Utilise that memory all day if needs be, to bring you back to that happy mood.

Hopefully you will find a little more happiness each day! Remember, happiness doesn’t just happen; it’s a matter of working towards it, like any other goal in life!
