It is said, that ‘being in the present’ is one of the greatest gifts, that is why it’s called ‘The Present’, and here’s a little insight to the concept: There are three elements to living in the present and creating success based on applying the principle of time.
Live in the Present: When you want to be happy and successful, and let’s face it, all of us do, we must strive to focus on the now. We must aim to be in the moment, which is constantly changing, constantly shifting, so that it takes all our effort and concentration to be truly present. When you are truly present, you will tune out to the outside world, and tune in to the beauty all around you in the moment.
It’s not an easy concept to grasp, but a wonderful start would be to become present in the moment… Stop reading (not quite yet), take three really deep breaths and begin to look around you with fresh eyes. Notice the beauty you never noticed before, become aware of the sounds around you that you unconsciously shut out all day long. Begin to feel the breath coming in and out your mouth, feel the fabric of your clothes on your skin, and truly become alive within your senses and emotions.
If your office is really that bad, and you simply can’t focus, get up, find a window, look out to the sky and do the same exercise. It’s amazing how different you will feel just by becoming present.
Imagine that when you are constantly going about your day, there is a monkey clanging symbols in your head, alongside an elephant playing a big brass trombone off key… All those thoughts… “I have to pick up the kids at 2.45 today, then go to get the car booked in, then… Oh and I have to phone Lauren back about the Grason case, that reminds me, I need to also call Jeremy to make sure the insurance cover is ok for Bill… What was I doing?” It really is impossible to focus on the present with all that cacophony of thought going on!
Being in the present allows us to respond to what is happening right now and take action, right now. This is the only moment you have to work with, so harness the power it offers. In saying that, we always want to make the present better than the past, that’s our natural progression in life…
Learn From the Past: Mistakes are only mistakes when we fail to learn from them. We can utilise our past, and the lessons others have learned from history and we can do things differently both in the present and in our future. When we dwell on the past, the ‘what if’s’ of our life, and we all have them, we stand to gain a grand total of nothing… In fact we lose both in time wasted and negative energy created!
When things don’t go as planned, and trust me, the best laid plan is one with three contingencies; you need to be able to move forward. The best way to really get to where you want to go is to look at what happened and figure out what part you played in the process. When you’re mapping out the next step be sure to take into account what didn’t work before. Chances are if it didn’t work then, it won’t work now…. Now, being in the present!
Work on the future: In living in the present there is clearly a need to plan for the future. Create in your mind the type of future you would like to have, then create actions and plans to move you towards it. The key is to not dream and dwell on the future without bringing it back to the present reality. We can only take action in the present, and that is the only possible way to create a better future!
So, in living in the present, we must also learn from the past to ensure our future is an improvement on the present!
Essentially, when we are able to learn from the past, live in the present and plan for the future, we can truly harness our own personal potential and live truly fulfilling lives!
