The Key to Success

DO NOT GIVE UP!!!

It’s really amazingly simple, and this last year I’ve experienced it first hand. Some coaches give you tips on what to do; others give you a 5-step process. Honestly, the single biggest factor in individual success is DO NOT GIVE UP!!!

I guess before we even get into the concept we need to talk about our individual perceptions of success. There is no one definition of success that’s a ‘one size fit’s all’. It’s an individual concept that we each need to formulate for ourselves. For some it’s fame and fortune, for others it’s a loving relationship, and for a few of us lucky ones success is merely finding happiness on a regular basis.

Let’s take a look at a few individuals over time and how this philosophy of DO NOT EVER GIVE UP has panned out for them and contributed to both their individual success and our growth as a human race.

Thomas Edison:
Just imagine if he had taken a different view on his inventions. Imagine he tried three or four inventions, got extremely disappointed, was then told by his mother that he simply can’t give up, so he went back to it, invented another three that didn’t work, and that was it!!! He gave up. No light for us! It was his sheer persistence and determination that created the light bulb! His key to success was: DO NOT GIVE UP!

Mother Theresa:
What would have happened to thousands of sick, dying and poverty stricken individuals if Mother Theresa had simply determined that it was too hard and she’d never have any significant impact? They would have died lonely, painful and horrible deaths. Even though she often felt she wasn’t making a difference she kept working, she had a blinding faith that she was on the right path and she simply did not give up!

Dalai Lama:
In 1951 when China invaded Tibet, the Dalai lama could have easily said “this isn’t going to work, I don’t have a place to live, or followers to guide, I’ll simply give up.” Imagine how different our world would be without the wonderful Nobel Peace Prize Winner of 1989. The Dalai Lama has not only given hope to a nation in exile, he has given hope to every person who has felt the suppression of authority, the destruction of an un-opposable force, the fear of annihilation. Had the Dalai Lama simply given up, the world would have lost a beautiful beaming light of hope, love and happiness. Just another great example of the DO NOT EVER GIVE UP philosophy!

Sometimes the best way to win the game of life is to simply hang on like hell till the weather starts to change. I mentioned our first hand experience in this concept of “DO NOT GIVE UP” and in a nutshell the last year was the most challenging year I’ve ever experienced financially. There were so many times when I wanted to give up, for the struggle to simply end and to go back to getting a ‘real’ job so we can make ends meet. Each time I was on the verge of giving up someone or something would pull me back from the edge, perhaps that’s because deep down I wasn’t really ever going to give up, or perhaps it was the universe playing a part in determining my path forward. I don’t know.

What I do know is that it gets easier. Please don’t take this as meaning I’ve got it all figured out and our bank account is running like clockwork, what I mean is that sometimes the hard work lays all the foundations. You can’t see it, but it’s happening in the background and when the building (the actual success) starts to form, boy will you feel a change … Just as long as you DO NOT GIVE UP!

Just think about a small child learning to walk, would you ever let them give up? Simply stop encouraging them to keep trying, allow them to crawl for the rest of their lives? You wouldn’t would you? You’d be in there picking them up, helping them figure it out and there’s a good chance you’d be willing them to ‘Never ever give up!’

Good luck, and if you haven’t already got the point … DON’T EVER GIVE UP!
