Imagine a life where, by the age of 35 almost every event in your life was scripted, you didn’t need to make any decisions anymore as you had faced just about every variety of challenge and had an automatic response. Well, today I have some good and bad news for you.
That is exactly what happens in our lives. From an early age we learn at an unconscious level the best response in any given situation, essentially what works and what doesn’t, and when that situation returns, we switch on the autopilot and allow it to take control. Unfortunately the path of least resistance is most heavily trod!
The great news is that we can consciously change the patterns that are happening in our lives, we just have to switch back to conscious thinking, and that requires utilising and training new areas of our brain.
The frontal lobe is the part of our brain that deals with new challenges or circumstances; it’s great for reflection and learning or simple quite meditation. If we make a conscious effort to start using our frontal lobe and bring it back into the game of life, then we will start to experience new results in our life. It’s like beginning to travel a new and exciting road. This time we can be in control rather than simply being along for the ride.
If the frontal lobe really is the key to happiness and better results in our life, the only question is how specifically can we begin using the frontal lobe? Well, essentially it’s about stepping outside your comfort zone, so think of the things you have been putting off, or always thought were simply outrageous and start a list. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Spend time in quiet reflection on your life and notice the thoughts that arise.
- Get adventurous; go for a bush walk, surf or a horse ride.
(I know the excuses are already popping into your head, but that is the automated response you’ve been using all your life. Take control and make your own choices regardless of your previous habits and life patterns.)
- Book in for a bungy jump, jet boat ride or bridge climb.
- Head to a climbing gym, bowling centre or a temple and simply experience something new.
- Treat yourself to a new cuisine, perhaps Thai, Indian, Korean, Vietnamese or anything you haven’t tried before.
- Book your next holiday to somewhere new and completely out of your comfort zone, perhaps hiking in Nepal, a safari in Africa, or a raft on the Nile.
Whatever you choose to start doing, appreciate that it is a step in the right direction to begin exercising the frontal lobe again and remember - the more we operate on a conscious level the more flexibility we will have in our lives, and the more flexibility we have the less we will be fazed by the challenges that arise.
