For some reason we have come to think of meditation as a process where we sit perfectly still in a serene setting for hours on end looking out into space thinking about nothing. In fact meditation, is any process where you are able to clear your mind of any unwanted thoughts and take control of its direction and focus.
That being the case, there are numerous ways that you can clear and focus your mind. They may not fit the traditional perceptions of meditation but the end result will be the same. Here are some things that you can try:
· Swimming laps or surfing
· Running
· Watching fish in a rock pool
· Gazing at an open fireplace or candle
· Writing a gratitude list
· Doing a Sudoku puzzle
These activities must require all your focus and have you complexly captivated and in the flow of the activity to count as meditation. I know many people who do these activities each day and receive the same benefits as those who meditate cross legged.
In a study by renowned cardiologist, Dr Herbert Benson, he concluded that people who meditate on a regular to semi-regular basis are happier in general than those who do not meditate at all. Benson has also researched the relationship between life expectancy and meditation and found that the two are directly linked. Quite simply, the more we meditate, the longer we live and the more health benefits we will experience.
When we talk about meditation, we often think of an idyllic setting and sitting for hours on end with crossed legs and a clear mind. Very rarely is this how real meditation happens. Instead, be realistic about meditation and just take some time out to sit quietly and listen to your thoughts. To truly master your life and happiness, you must first learn to master your mind!
If you would like to try more traditional meditations here are two simple ones for you to try.
Start by getting into a comfortable position. Take five deep breaths in and out. Gently allow your eyes to close and begin to focus on the point directly between your eyes.
Think of your favourite value such as faith, or favourite emotion such as love. Imagine that it’s been planted in your mind as a tiny, glowing seed. Each time you breathe in, the seed expands and you feel the emotion spreading throughout your mind, then down your neck, through your shoulders, your torso, down your arms to your fingers, and finally right down your legs to your toes. With each breath the seed grows brighter, and you’re filled with the value or emotion of your choice. You will become more relaxed and happier with each breath!
Start by getting into a comfortable position. Take five deep breaths in and out. Gently allow your eyes to close and begin to focus on the point directly between your eyes.
Begin by smiling; a big heartfelt grin that fills you with happiness. Now spread that smile throughout your whole body. With each breath send it to every extremity, every internal organ, and every tiny particle. Notice the glowing radiance and happiness that overcomes you as you begin to smile all over. As the smile increases so does your inner peace and genuine appreciation for life and all it has to offer.
Enjoy whatever form of meditation you choose and to try and remember what Dr Herbert says about it adding significantly to your life expectancy!
