I took a little time yesterday (OK a lot) to just relax and read. I sat in the sun while it lasted and grabbed a little book called ‘Family’. It was compiled by M.I.L.K. and on reading the introduction I had tears in my eyes. Perhaps that’s because I’m pregnant and more teary than usual or perhaps it just really struck a chord. Either way I wanted to share it with you.
James McBride is the author and collator of the beautiful words and photographs in the book and he makes some beautiful points.
“We live in a world that is fresh out of discoveries. We have plumbed the planet to its depths. We’ve walked the ocean floor, blasted into space, built metropolises over what was once forest, discovered the internal combustion engine, created cars, planes, trains and rockets that run on gas, sun rays, algae, popcorn even soda pop. We’ve plundered the world’s great rivers and seas of fish, algae, microbes, plants, buried treasure and every living thing. Nearly every spot on the globe has been mapped, chronicled, documented, discussed, mulled over, historicalized, tagged, studied, fictionalized, exploited, polluted, filmed for Hollywood and manipulated by someone clambering for a buck, yen, marks, pride, their place in history or some greater glory.
“Yet there is no greater miracle than watching a child being born. There is no mightier conquest that to teach a six-year-old the magic of reading. There is no greater force on earth than the warm breath of a toothless old grandma.
“Family is the last and greatest discovery. It is our last miracle!”
He goes on to speak about challenges we face in our rich society. The prominence of Depression, Obesity, War, Violence, Consumerism, Drugs and the absence of Respect. Yet, in every one of those challenges, a solution can be found within a loving family. With Tolerance, Peace, Love, Respect and Compassion problems can be solved.
In your own life think of the challenges that await you and how you can open your arms, your heart and your mind to your family. For their guidance, their support, their understanding or their love.
Every day is a new beginning. Not just with your family but with your life. Each time you go to bed you get cleansed of the day that’s passed and each time you wake up, as the sun rises, you get to start all over again with a clean slate. Anything that you did yesterday that you’d didn’t like about yourself you can improve today, anything that you want to change, but didn’t get to, you can today.
Every single day is a new start, a new life, a new beginning. Life is too short to worry about yesterday or tomorrow. Your challenge today is to be the best you that you can be. Just for today. To love, respect and appreciate your family and to treat them for what they truly are. The last miracle left on earth.
