Bottomline

People attention saved papal visit

But where was the Governor General?

The final days of the visit to our shores by Pope Benedict proved the highlight of the weeklong event, and this was largely due to his attention to the people.

Once he was allowed to get away from the politicians, leading lights in a variety of clergy, and the like, the Pope looked like he thoroughly enjoyed himself.

But where was the Governor General during the week?

Apart from a fleeting appearance or two our Governor General seemed to be on the outer as far as the Papal visit organisers were concerned. Makes you wonder whether we really need one at all these days!

But back to Benedict. For one who was a doubter about the whole visit I must admit he showed his true colours in the last few days and the people obviously appreciated it.

Another thing I liked about him was that he didn’t push religion down our throats and he seemed to win support from the leaders of the other religious beliefs.

KidzWish Christmas Party date set

Friday 21 November next is the date set for the annual KidzWish Christmas party for disabled and disadvantaged children and once again the WIN entertainment Centre will be the venue.

The theme for this year will be A Magical Christmas and Channel 9’s Today Show host Karl Stefanovic will be the master of ceremonies.

Upwards of 2500 are expected to attend.

The Foundation also received a welcome boost to their funds on Friday when locally based firm Financial Control handed them a cheque for $20 000.

Air travel through the roof

Enquired during the week about flying to Melbourne and back and nearly fell off the chair when it was suggested that all up I would have to fork out some $600.

School holidays, of course, plus the many pilgrims to our shores were suggested as the major reasons for the cost hike.

What I’m still trying to work out, however, is why the return flight from Melbourne to Sydney was being costed at considerably more than getting there from Sydney?

Seems like air travel might also need some monitoring by the government. I wonder what our PM Kevin pays for his many overseas jaunts or, for that matter, who actually pays for them?

NRL can only blame themselves

When you look at it the NRL must take most of the blame for its players wanting to go overseas and play the game, or to accept lucrative offers to play union in Europe.

All that open transfer that was available earlier in the season should not have been allowed, and it has obviously sunk in that if you already have a contract with an NRL club it seems to matter for nothing.

What will he actually do?

The recently appointed administrator to Shellharbour City Council is on the record as saying it will definitely take him four years to get things right.

It seems a long time, particularly when you consider one of the major causes for the council’s demise has already been fixed - the sacking of a dissident and under performing group of elected councillors.

Sure, the administrator will have to look hard at some of the former council’s decisions, but four years? One wonders whether too much of his time might be spent on digging up old sores, which by now are largely forgotten by the ratepayers.

Just what you’ve been waiting for

The wait is almost over. Yes, I believe the city council rate notices will come our way sometime this week.

I can hardly wait!
