Come dance with me …

There’s a massive interest in dancing out there in our community and award-winning businesswoman Belinda Kawalek is loving it

The principal of Dynamic Moves Dance Studios, at Dapto, was honoured recently when she was judged one of the Regional Business Persons of the Year at the annual Illawarra and South Coast Local Business Awards.

Belinda shared the honour with Curves (Kiama), the Lagoon Restaurant and Bay Boutique, Bateman’s Bay.

One of the reasons for the surge in dancing interest, she says, is the success of the television show “So you think you can dance”, and it is particularly evidenced by the number of boys wanting to try their skills, particularly in the area of hip hop.

Belinda, who is Dapto born and bred, studied event management when she left school and joined local company Staging Connections where she event managed at The Novotel Northbeach for some 10 years.

A dancer herself since the age of four years – “Mum thought I was too shy” she says – Belinda competed in local Eistedfod’s and 10 years ago she founded Dynamic Moves Dance Studio operating from the United Church hall in Dapto.

“I wanted to create a scene that would offer exciting, vibrant, professional and educational opportunities through the art of dance,” she says.

Her school, now in new premises in Marshall Street, Dapto, caters for the dancing interests of three – year – olds up to adults and covers such areas of the art as classical ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical and contemporary.

She says the school caters for those wanting to learn through to those looking to embark on a professional career in the future.

And among her biggest customer base are the local primary schools.

Youngies love to dress up

Belinda says while hip hop and jazz are probably the favourites with most younger children, girls love the ballet as it offers them a chance to really get dressed up and “be little princesses”.

There is also a bit of drama associated with ballet, she says, and this also allows the young ones to do some play-acting.

Although she is not a particular fan of Eistedfods Belinda’s school does offer examinations and assessments in each genre, and her students take part in an end of the year themed production.

One thing she is sure of, however, is that dancing offers younger people in general a chance to develop, particularly their social skills, it also makes them creative and keeps them physically active.
