Once again Wollongong has been left holding the baby after a series of recent visits to the area by several NSW State Ministers, and yet our neighbour Shellharbour gained some benefits
Down south they received a promise of funding for a No Dole for Students program at Oak Flats, $1 million for work on Lake Illawarra and a boost for their local hospital’s birthing facilities.
Here Mission Australia was presented with a certificate for community work, a Minister visited and spoke with staff at the Juvenile Justice Community Services offices and Michael Costa got into a war of words with the fire-fighters.
Still, we ought to be used to it by now which, when you think about it, it is a poor reward for a city whose majority of voters continue to put Labor back into power in the area.

Time for a decision on the mall
It’s time for those people who can determine the fate of our city mall stopped their talkfests and got around to making a decision on the future of the place.
I’m led to believe the proposed redevelopment of Crown Central including the overhead bridge across Keira Street to expand shopping facilities is now heading towards a bumper $400 million cost and they would be just one operator who’d like to see action rather than words.
Our city council holds the key to the mall’s future and it’s time they clarified the issue.
But then again when you take into account their ongoing dithering and buck passing about the future of West Dapto we shouldn’t expect any immediate action.
I used to call us “weedy” Wollongong, but now we could replace the “City of Innovation” tag with “Dither City”.

It could be a croaky voice
The decision by NSW Lands Minister Tony Kelly to allow residents to have a voice in selecting the final proposal for the redevelopment of Wollongong Harbour is “croaky” to say the least.
While residents can offer their thoughts they won’t be able to have access to the six alternative “commercial” ideas already sitting in the Minister’s office.
Don’t be surprised then Minister if you don’t face another public backlash over your actions.

But, what about the parking?
So, Premier Morris “Who” has agreed to discuss possible future extensions at the WIN Stadium, but the biggest problem facing the ongoing use of the ground will remain a shortage of parking.
Why aren’t we looking for an alternative site in the city?
Say, for instance, in the centre of the Kembla Grange racetrack, an area which certainly offers parking advantages and which is central to northern (using the freeway) and southern suburbs.

Bowling day to help charity
The 10 pin bowling bonanza at AMF Bowling’s Albion Park Rail alley on Sunday 24 August will be a big family affair with proceeds going to local charities.
Co – organised by the bowling alley management and Dapto Rotary Club the event will run from 10am to 1pm and two games of bowls will only cost $12.
Added to the fun will be a jumping castle, face painting, sample bags and Elvis impersonators.
And a highlight will be the drawing of a raffle, the prize being a Rod Wishart autographed Guernsey.
Last year this family day out raised many, many dollars for charity and the organisers are looking for a repeat performance.

Action at last
After innumerable stories and photos of Wendell Sailor in our “local daily” he finally cracked it against Brisbane.
But the real match of the round was between the Sea Eagles and the Rabbitohs. There was a time in the second half when if you turned your head for a moment you missed another scintillating try.
Pity for the NRL it hasn’t had many matches like this and last round’s Storm versus Manly throughout the season.
