Catered for in your own back yard

Always a local Graeme Jay started in catering in 2002 and last year commenced a new enterprise Catering2U

Born at Gwynneville and educated at St Brigid’s Primary School and Edmund Rice College before attending TAFE and the University of Wollongong to undertake an Industrial Chemistry degree, Graeme’s first job was at the steelworks, where he spent 19 years, before moving to Lucas Heights.

Figtree – based business Catering2U specialises in catering for its customers in almost any setting with home ‘barbies’ high on the favourites list – Graeme’s wife Mary assists in the business and they employ six casual staff.

In fact, Graeme and his staff have become used to providing their specialty – spit roasts – at various function centres, community halls, homes, backyards and parks, and so the list goes on.

And it’s not just only local with catering jobs for corporate client's as far afield as Ulladulla, Katoomba and Lithgow.

Catering2U offers its food fresh and cooked “on the spot” using stainless steel rotisseries with glass viewing windows. The benefits include the visual delight for guests of being able to watch the meats roasting over the gas flames and to take in the mouth watering aromas as they arrive at the function.

And then, as Gaeme says, there’s the added delight of having the piping hot and succulent roasts carved directly to the guests plates.

Graeme suggests that between 70 and 80 per cent of their catering involves the spit roasts.

Next most popular is their range of finger – food which is an ideal menu for a cocktail party. The menu includes such items as chicken skewers, salt and pepper prawns, crispy fish bites, gourmet party pies and cocktail spring rolls.

Breakfasts on offer

Catering2U is now offering a breakfast service - which is already gaining in popularity.

Again the company uses its gas – fired ovens and barbecue plates to efficiently serve between 50 and 300 guests a hot brekkie of sausages, bacon, poached egg, baked beans and herb and parmesan covered baked tomato.

Catering2u offers a money back satisfaction guarantee. The team is proud of the more than 100 testimonials of thanks already received from a satisfied clientele.

Meeting new people and becoming part of the party atmosphere is something Graeme enjoys, and it’s one of the key reasons he continues to revel in his work.

Graeme says a highlight of his time in this business was recently being asked to cater for a group of pilgrims staying in Wollongong as part of their World Youth Day tour.

They all travelled here from California and Catering2U prepared hot breakfasts for them on several mornings and spit roast dinners on two evenings.

Graeme says that he and his staff were fortunate to view cultural differences previously unexperienced such as breaking into their song of prayer at breakfast time.

A most gracious letter from the tour organisers Harvest Youth Tours has pride of place at Graeme’s base.
