How clean is your house?

Fellow Wollongong residents, when we think about it we spend about two thirds of our life sleeping, eating and basically living at home, but where does cleaning the house properly fit into our lifestyle?

And whether we lucky Wollongong-ites like it or not, some (perhaps many) of our homes harbour germs/toxins through the extensive use of chemicals. There are also the “funnies” that emanate from our household pets, and again, whether we like it or not, from Wollongong’s industries.

Tad Kulig, born and bred in the Wollongong area, has made a study of all this which led him to establish The Gleaming Home Service, a system that is specifically aimed at removing bacteria, germs, fungi and dust mites that collect in your house.

But let’s go back in time to when Tad left Wollongong’s Edmund Rice College and undertook an auto electrician’s apprenticeship and was self employed as an auto electrician before moving into security where he became a firearms instructor.

Then on one occasion one of his co – workers accidentally pulled the trigger on a loaded firearm and the bullet “whistled past my ear”, Tad says, an experience which was enough to quickly turn his attention to the cleaning industry.

Tad became interested in the various methods being used both here and overseas in new home cleaning practices, and after a period working as a casual for a major company he finally went out on his own.

His ongoing research led him to the purchase rugs which he dirtied in many ways and experimented with his new craft with various cleaning methods.

He says it makes good sense that we should regularly try to detox the environment in which we live.

His Wollongong-based business Gleaming Home Services has been operating since last September and making use of the many hours spent in researching and testing natural products he naturally enough uses environmentally friendly products wherever possible.

Tad says there has been an increase in various allergies and his business success has been largely due to the extra effort he makes when cleaning a house. One example is the spraying of a carpet with eucalyptus after it has been vacuumed, which not only helps get rid of dust mites but leaves a fresh natural aroma throughout the house.

One job that many people often overlook, Tad says, is to clean behind and under the fridge which can create a scene where it becomes a magnet for dust, germs and creepy crawlies.

Another thing people also overlook, he says, is to move the lounge and clean behind it.

And, he asks, have you ever detoxed your underlay? While you might change your sheets regularly, he says, the underlay is a target for dust and bed mites.

It’s important we Wollongong residents stay healthy

Tad says that with the obvious increase in allergies, coughs and flu’s, in particular, living in a healthy environment is a must.

A simple home cleaning tip Tad offers is to wipe down your front screen door with a damp cloth. “You will be surprised at what you get,” he says.

And to help keep cobwebs at bay, both inside and outside of your home, Tad suggests cleaning away the cobweb and then spraying the area with lemon juice which, he says is a natural deterrent for spiders.

He also says that the lemon treatment is ideal for removing those problem stains around the kitchen stove, and the use of a vinegar base will kill off the mould in bathrooms.

“We make sure we are clean, so why not ensure the place where we spend so much of our time is also kept spick and span:, Tad says.
