The former Corrimal High student who took up nursing when she left school, training at Sydney’s Prince Henry’s and later at Port Kembla hospitals, has been operating her health and fitness company since earlier this year.
Jen says the concept her business is all about came into being last year and centres largely on how to help people of all ages beat the many lifestyle diseases that are plaguing our health system.
Now she is actively putting her wealth of nursing and psychology experience to work with Health Abundance which is providing the only service of its kind in the Illawarra.
Jen offers clients three, six and 12 month programs which are individually designed to meet the needs of those who feel they would once and all take complete control of their diet, nutrition, exercise, stress and time management.
Her ‘No Weight Gain in Winter’ program is held over three months and if you sign up before 31 July you will receive a free pedometer, which is an instrument that measures the distance covered in walking by counting the number of steps taken and multiplying by the length of a single step.
She says that while many of her clients complain at first that they don’t have the time for exercise, recent research suggests short bouts of movement over a day is all that is needed to keep your fitness in hand.
“Grab a skipping rope and spend five minutes using it, climb stairs or steps – even just three sets – walk around the house or do 10 sit-to-stands from your chair using your legs and not arms,” Jen says. And also suggests “losing your remote is helpful.”
Grocery guru
Another unique program Jen offers is Grocery Guru which, she says, is a fun hands- on way to learn how to make healthier food choices at your local supermarket.
To this end she will take individuals or groups out shopping and explain to them how to understand labels, nutritional panels, marketing tricks and portion control.
Clients learn how to save money and plan meals quickly and efficiently. She currently has a promotion for anyone who comes along before 31st July will go into the draw for a $100 Woolies voucher.
Jen says the obesity problems that face many of us today, particularly the young people, can largely be blamed on watching too much television, not enough simple exercise and not eating properly, particularly vegetables.
“Learning to eat properly is not rocket science, but it does have to be worked on,” Jen says.
Health Abundance is open five days and Saturday mornings by appointment and is located at Suite 5, 242 Princes Highway, Corrimal, which is immediately opposite Civic Video.
